The mix is often intelligent, active, and trainable, yet each dog’s parentage and inheritance determine whether it is a suitable match for your household.
Bordoodles appeal to people who want an affectionate, athletic dog with strong learning ability. The same qualities can create demanding exercise, training, grooming, and companionship needs. Treat the Bordoodle as an individual mixed-breed dog whose likely traits can be estimated from both parent breeds, not as a standardized breed with guaranteed outcomes.
Key takeaways
- A Bordoodle is a Border Collie–Poodle mix, so adult size, coat, shedding, temperament, and health cannot be guaranteed from the mix name alone.
- Bordoodles are often intelligent and trainable, but both parent breeds are active working or performance-oriented dogs that need daily exercise and mental engagement.
- A Poodle-like coat may shed less than a Border Collie coat, but it can mat easily and may require frequent brushing, combing, and professional trimming.
- Bordoodles are not reliably hypoallergenic because coat, dander, saliva, and individual allergy responses vary.
- Responsible buyers should investigate the specific Border Collie and Poodle parent lines and request verifiable health-screening records for both parents.
What is a Bordoodle?
A Bordoodle Dog Breed Information and Characteristics overview starts with the most important fact: a Bordoodle is generally a cross between a Border Collie and a Poodle, sometimes called a Borderdoodle. The cross has no single universally accepted breed standard, so individual dogs can differ substantially in size, coat, energy, behavior, and health.
The Poodle parent may be Standard, Miniature, or Toy, and puppies do not inherit a predictable half-and-half package of traits. Even puppies from the same litter may have different coat textures, shedding levels, body sizes, and temperaments. PetGOV’s Bordoodle reference also cautions that the mix can vary because different genetic influences may dominate in different dogs.

The most accurate description is therefore not “a medium-sized, nonshedding family dog.” Bordoodles can be bright, active companions, but an individual dog’s parentage, early socialization, training, environment, and personality matter more than a predictable label.
How big will a Bordoodle get?
There is no authoritative, universally accepted Bordoodle height or weight range. The Poodle variety used in the breeding and the size of both parents are more useful clues than an online average, and even those clues cannot guarantee an adult measurement.
| Dog | Height or size reference | Weight reference | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Border Collie | 18–22 inches at the shoulder, depending on sex | 30–55 pounds | Parent-breed reference, not a Bordoodle standard |
| Standard Poodle | Over 15 inches at the shoulder | Approximately 40–70 pounds, with sex-based figures in the AKC profile | Parent-breed reference, not a prediction for every Bordoodle |
| Bordoodle | No dependable universal range | No dependable universal range | Expected size depends heavily on Poodle variety, parent size, and inheritance |
According to the American Kennel Club’s current Border Collie profile, Border Collies are typically 18–22 inches tall, weigh 30–55 pounds, and have a listed life expectancy of 12–15 years. According to the American Kennel Club’s current Standard Poodle profile, Standard Poodles are over 15 inches tall, have typical listed weights of approximately 40–70 pounds, and have a listed life expectancy of 10–18 years. Those are parent-breed figures; they should not be averaged into a supposed Bordoodle standard.
When estimating a puppy’s adult size, ask which Poodle variety was used, request the parents’ actual heights and weights, and ask about the size of previous adult offspring from the same lines. A responsible breeder should explain uncertainty rather than promise an exact adult size.

A Bordoodle may have a wavy, curly, or more densely feathered coat resembling the Border Collie side. Coat color, texture, furnishings, shedding, and grooming requirements can vary even within one litter.
A Poodle-like coat may be soft and curly and can grow continuously enough to require regular trimming. A Border Collie-like coat may be denser, feathered, and more seasonal in its shedding. Mixed coats can combine features from both, making the coat difficult to predict until the puppy matures.
Appearance should not be used as a shortcut for temperament or care requirements. A curly-coated Bordoodle is not automatically calmer, and a straighter-coated Bordoodle is not automatically easier to groom or train.
Is a Bordoodle a good family dog?
A Bordoodle can be a good family dog for an active, involved household that can provide supervision, training, exercise, enrichment, and companionship every day. A Bordoodle may be a poor fit for a household seeking a quiet dog that is content with a short walk and long periods alone.

DogTime describes Bordoodles as often eager to please, energetic, affectionate, and alert, and notes that they may do well with children when appropriately raised and socialized. Individual temperament still depends on genetics, early experiences, training, environment, and the dog’s own personality.
The Border Collie side can contribute herding behavior, intense focus, sensitivity, and a tendency to control movement. Border Collies may try to herd running children, other pets, bicycles, or livestock. The AKC Border Collie profile says the breed often does best with older, well-behaved children because of this tendency. That guidance does not rule out a Bordoodle living with children; it means that boundaries, socialization, active supervision, and training are important.
Introduce any dog carefully to children and teach children not to climb on, chase, corner, disturb, or take food from the dog. Supervision remains necessary even when a Bordoodle has previously behaved well around children.
How much exercise does a Bordoodle need?
A Bordoodle needs daily physical activity plus mental work, but there is no responsible single exercise-minute target for every Bordoodle. Puppies, adolescents, adults, seniors, and dogs with orthopedic or other medical limitations have different needs.
The Border Collie parent can contribute unusually high drive. The AKC describes the Border Collie as extremely energetic and needing daily exercise beyond a casual walk, while the Poodle parent commonly enjoys retrieving, swimming, jogging, long walks, agility, and obedience work.
A practical adult routine may include:
- Age-appropriate walks, hiking, running, retrieving, or active play.
- Short, reward-based training sessions spread through the day.
- Scent games, food puzzles, shaping exercises, retrieving tasks, or other problem-solving activities.
- Calmness training, mat settling, and planned rest rather than constantly increasing physical intensity.
- Safe social exposure and management around children, cats, livestock, bicycles, and other moving objects.
More exercise is not always the solution to unwanted behavior. Repeatedly exhausting a high-drive dog can create a fitter dog without teaching relaxation. A Bordoodle also needs to learn how to settle, wait, disengage from movement, and rest in the home. A veterinarian can help tailor activity to age, body condition, joint health, and medical history.
Are Bordoodles easy to train?
Bordoodles are often highly trainable because both parent breeds are intelligent and responsive to learning, but intelligence does not make ownership effortless. A bright dog can learn unwanted behaviors quickly when those behaviors are rewarding or consistently reinforced.
The American Kennel Club says Border Collies are highly intelligent and highly trainable and recommends early socialization and continuing obedience work. The AKC says, “Poodles are extremely intelligent and are easily trained.” Use reward-based training, clear routines, and short sessions that keep the dog successful.

Prioritize recall, loose-leash walking, impulse control, leave-it, calm greetings, cooperative grooming, settling on a mat, and safe behavior around children and other animals. Train around gradually increasing distractions rather than assuming that a behavior learned in a quiet room will automatically work outdoors.
Early socialization should mean carefully managed, positive exposure to people, surfaces, sounds, handling, grooming tools, car travel, friendly dogs, and appropriate environments. Socialization does not mean forcing a puppy into overwhelming situations. A qualified reward-based trainer can help with herding, chasing, reactivity, separation-related behavior, or difficulty settling.
Do Bordoodles shed, and are they hypoallergenic?
Bordoodles may shed less than some Border Collies, but shedding is not predictable enough to promise a low-shedding or hypoallergenic dog. No Bordoodle can guarantee a reaction-free home because allergy responses involve dander, saliva, coat particles, and the individual person’s sensitivity.
Some Poodle-like coats trap loose hair and may appear to shed very little. The same coat can mat rapidly if dead hair is not removed. A Bordoodle with a Border Collie-like coat may shed more noticeably, especially during seasonal coat changes. A mixed coat may do either, or fall somewhere between.

People with allergies should spend time with the specific adult dog or puppy and, where possible, with the parent dogs before committing. That visit cannot guarantee future tolerance, because a puppy’s mature coat and the household’s allergy response may change.
How often does a Bordoodle need grooming?
A Bordoodle’s grooming schedule depends on coat type, length, activity, moisture, and whether the coat mats. A curly or Poodle-like coat may need very frequent brushing and professional trimming, while a Border Collie-like coat may need regular brushing with more attention during shedding periods.
| Coat tendency | Likely maintenance | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Border Collie-like, dense or feathered | Brush about once or twice weekly; increase brushing when shedding requires it | Loose hair, tangles, and hidden debris |
| Poodle-like, curly or woolly | Frequent brushing and combing; many owners use a shorter trim and professional grooming about every four to six weeks | Mats close to the skin |
| Mixed or uncertain texture | Inspect the coat frequently and adjust tools and schedule to the actual dog | Assuming one routine will suit every Bordoodle |
AKC grooming guidance for Border Collies recommends brushing once or twice a week, with more frequent brushing when seasonal shedding makes it necessary. AKC guidance for full-coated Poodles notes that daily brushing may be needed to prevent mats and that many owners choose professional grooming every four to six weeks.
A slicker brush for a Bordoodle can be useful for working through a suitable wavy or curly coat, but brush choice should match the individual coat. AKC grooming guidance recommends a slicker brush and says brushing should reach the skin without scraping it. Follow brushing with a stainless-steel comb for mats or missed tangles; the comb should pass through the coat all the way to the skin without snagging.

Introduce brushing, combing, nail handling, ear checks, bathing, clippers, and dryer sounds gradually while pairing them with rewards. Do not force a painful brush through a tight mat. A professional groomer or veterinarian should handle extensive matting, irritated skin, painful ears, or a dog that cannot be safely groomed at home.
What health problems can Bordoodles have?
Bordoodles can inherit health risks associated with either parent breed, and crossing a Border Collie with a Poodle does not remove inherited disease risk. The reviewed sources do not provide a robust Bordoodle-specific disease-prevalence study, so parent-breed screening is more useful than a generic claim about the mix.
The AKC Border Collie profile lists screening considerations including hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, deafness, epilepsy, collie eye anomaly, neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, and trapped neutrophil syndrome, with hip and ophthalmologist evaluations among recommended breed-club tests.
The AKC Standard Poodle profile identifies hip and eye evaluations and discusses testing or evaluation for neonatal encephalopathy with seizures, autoimmune thyroiditis, and von Willebrand disease I. The profile also discusses conditions including epilepsy, sebaceous adenitis, immune-mediated disorders, and bloat.
These lists identify questions for screening; they do not predict that a particular Bordoodle will develop any listed condition. Ask a veterinarian how parent health records, the puppy’s examination, family history, and ongoing preventive care fit together. Seek prompt veterinary care for persistent lameness, seizures, severe digestive symptoms, sudden behavior changes, painful skin or ears, breathing difficulty, or other urgent signs.
What should I ask a Bordoodle breeder?
A responsible Bordoodle breeder should be willing to discuss both parent lines, provide verifiable records, and explain the limits of predicting a mixed-breed puppy. A label such as “health tested” is not enough without knowing which tests were performed, on which parent, and what the results mean.
- Which Poodle variety is involved, and what are the adult sizes of both parents?
- Can I see verifiable health-testing records for the Border Collie and Poodle parents?
- Were the parents’ hips and eyes evaluated?
- Which DNA tests were completed, and what were the results?
- What are the parents’ temperaments around people, dogs, children, grooming, livestock, and moving objects?
- How were the puppies socialized and introduced to brushing, combing, nail care, handling, and household sounds?
- What veterinary records, vaccination information, contract terms, and return-to-breeder provisions are provided?
- Can I meet the mother and, when appropriate, see information about the father and close relatives?
Be cautious about guarantees of exact adult size, a nonshedding coat, perfect behavior with children, or freedom from inherited disease. A breeder who acknowledges variability is providing more useful information than one who treats the Bordoodle name as a standardized result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a Bordoodle eat, and what veterinary care does it need?
A Bordoodle’s diet should be selected with a veterinarian according to age, expected or actual size, activity, body condition, and medical history. There is too much individual variation to recommend one food or feeding amount for every Bordoodle.

Routine care generally includes veterinary examinations, weight monitoring, dental care, parasite prevention, and vaccinations according to local veterinary guidance. A veterinarian can also advise on growth, exercise, reproductive decisions, coat or ear problems, and any inherited-risk information supplied by the breeder. Do not begin medication or supplements based only on a breed article.
Is a Bordoodle a good first dog?
A Bordoodle may suit a first-time owner who is prepared to learn about reward-based training, grooming, enrichment, and herding behavior and who has enough time for daily involvement. A Bordoodle is a less suitable first dog for someone expecting a naturally easy, low-maintenance, independent companion.
| Household situation | Likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Active owner who enjoys training and outdoor activities | Potentially strong fit | Exercise, learning, and structured interaction can meet the dog’s likely needs |
| Home seeking a low-shedding dog with guaranteed allergy compatibility | Poor fit | Coat, shedding, and allergy outcomes are not guaranteed |
| Family with young or fast-moving children | Possible with active supervision | Herding and chasing tendencies require boundaries, socialization, and management |
| Owner away for long periods with little enrichment available | Often poor fit | Intelligent, active dogs may become frustrated or develop unwanted behaviors |
| Owner willing to budget time for brushing and grooming | Potentially good fit | Some coats may need frequent brushing, combing, and professional trimming |
How does a Bordoodle compare with a Border Collie or Poodle?
The key difference is predictability: a Border Collie or Poodle has a recognized breed standard and more established breed-level expectations, while a Bordoodle can inherit a less predictable combination of traits.
| Decision factor | Bordoodle | Border Collie | Poodle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult-size predictability | Variable; depends partly on Poodle variety | More standardized breed range | Varies by recognized variety, but each variety has a standard |
| Coat and shedding | May be wavy, curly, or Border Collie-like; shedding varies | Dense, feathered coat with seasonal shedding possible | Curly coat requiring substantial maintenance when kept long |
| Exercise | Likely high; individual needs vary | Very high and usually requires purposeful activity | Active and benefits from daily exercise and performance activities |
| Mental stimulation | Likely high because both parent breeds are intelligent | High, with herding and work-oriented drive | High, with strong learning and performance ability |
| Herding or movement control | May inherit it from the Border Collie side | Common breed consideration | Retrieving and activity tendencies may be more prominent than herding |
| Health information | Requires investigation of both parent lines | Breed-specific screening guidance exists | Breed-specific screening guidance exists |
Other active mixes, including Australian Shepherd crosses and Labradoodles, should be compared using the same practical questions: how predictable is adult size, how much grooming will the coat require, how much exercise and mental work are needed, how does the dog handle solitude, and how transparent is the breeder’s health testing? A breed name is less important than the individual dog and the quality of the breeding, socialization, and support.
Is a Bordoodle worth it?
A Bordoodle may be an excellent partner for an active owner who wants an affectionate, trainable dog and is comfortable with variability. The mix is not automatically easy, hypoallergenic, nonshedding, calm, or inexpensive to maintain.
Before choosing one, evaluate the specific puppy or adult dog, meet the parents when possible, review health records, observe coat texture and behavior, and plan for exercise, training, grooming, veterinary care, and companionship. If a predictable adult size, coat, or temperament is essential, a well-bred dog from an established breed with a clear standard may be easier to evaluate than a cross whose traits can vary widely.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Bordoodle?
A Bordoodle is a cross between a Border Collie and a Poodle. Because the Poodle parent may be Standard, Miniature, or Toy and inheritance varies, Bordoodles do not have one dependable adult size, coat, shedding level, or temperament.
Is a Bordoodle a good family dog?
Bordoodles may be good family dogs in active, supervised households, but they can inherit herding and chasing behavior from the Border Collie side. Socialization, training, boundaries, and supervision around children are important.
Are Bordoodles hypoallergenic?
Some Bordoodles may shed relatively little, particularly those with a Poodle-like coat, but no Bordoodle is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. Dander, saliva, coat, and individual allergy sensitivity all affect reactions.
How big will a Bordoodle get?
There is no universally accepted Bordoodle size range. Adult size depends heavily on the Poodle variety, the parents’ actual sizes, and which traits the puppy inherits.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A Bordoodle can be an intelligent, affectionate, athletic companion, but the Border Collie–Poodle mix is not standardized enough to guarantee size, coat, shedding, temperament, or health. Choose the individual dog and the breeder’s evidence—not the appealing label—and be prepared for daily exercise, mental work, grooming, socialization, and close companionship.
