Help a fearful dog around visitors by preventing unwanted contact first, then building positive associations gradually—at a distance where the dog can stay comfortable. Don’t force a greeting. Hiding, barking, and growling can all be signs of fear, and a dog with a bite or threatening-lunge history needs separation and an individualized safety plan.
Why a dog may hide, bark, or growl at visitors
Fear does not always look like retreat. Some dogs hide or cower; others bark, growl, or lunge when a person enters. Those behaviors do not show that a dog is comfortable or trying to dominate a visitor. They are reasons to give the dog space and take safety seriously.

Make visits safe before trying to train
Set up a retreat
Before the doorbell rings or anyone knocks, prepare a quiet, secure area where your dog can rest undisturbed. For one-off visitors such as repair workers—or anyone who may not follow your instructions—keep the dog comfortably separated for the entire visit. A pet gate may help in some homes, but choose containment that suits your layout and keeps guests out of reach. Tell guests what to do
Ask visitors not to stare at, call to, talk to, reach toward, or pet the dog. Friendly attention can still feel like pressure to a worried dog. If guests cannot follow those rules, keep the dog in the safe area rather than attempting an introduction. A barrier or closed door should prevent accidental approaches.
Build comfort gradually during planned visits
Practice only when your dog can safely be in the room and has enough distance from the visitor to remain comfortable. The goal is a calmer emotional response—not a greeting, a pet, or simply stopping a bark. - Start at a comfortable distance. Let your dog notice the visitor without asking the dog to approach. The visitor should remain quiet and ignore the dog.
- Reward calm noticing. You can reward your dog for quietly observing, then take the dog back to the safe area. Keep the exposure brief.
- Let the dog recover. Give your dog time to relax before another repetition. If the dog becomes uncomfortable, increase distance or end the session; do not press closer.
- Use tossed treats, not lures. A visitor may occasionally toss a tiny, tasty treat while continuing to ignore the dog. Toss it so the dog can take it without having to approach the person. Do not coax or hand-feed at close range.
- Adjust for harder moments. A visitor standing up or moving around can be more difficult than sitting still. Add distance or reinforcement for those moments, and stop if your dog is no longer comfortable.
Small pieces of soft treats, cheese, or hot dog can be convenient rewards. Keep portions tiny, and use only foods your dog can safely eat. The visitor-specific plan in AVSAB’s second guide emphasizes that progress depends on the individual dog and is not an instant fix.
When separation and professional guidance are the right choice
If your dog has bitten, tried to bite, or made threatening lunges, do not rely on the general practice steps above. Keep the dog physically separated from visitors whenever safe participation is uncertain, and ask your veterinarian for an individualized plan or referral to a veterinary behaviorist or qualified reward-based behavior professional. Discuss medication only with a veterinarian; do not self-prescribe.

Punishing barking or growling, or using aversive tools, can add distress without making a visitor feel safer to the dog. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s 2021 Humane Dog Training Position Statement says: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.” AVSAB’s public position statements and handouts include a 2025 board statement.
