If you’re concerned your dog may bite, seek professional help rather than trying to manage the behavior alone. Start with your veterinarian, arrange a safety plan that fits your dog and situation, and ask whether referral to a qualified behavior professional is appropriate. A bite history is not a reason to assume nothing can help, but no professional can responsibly guarantee a particular outcome.
When should you seek help?
Get professional input as soon as you’re worried your dog might bite someone. Growling, lunging, snapping, or other threatening behavior toward people warrants attention even if no one has been bitten. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) advises owners not to muddle through alone when they think their dog may bite, and recommends an in-person plan where possible. AVSAB’s guidance on dogs reacting to strangers offers examples, but the right plan depends on the individual dog and circumstances.
A sudden or unexplained change in behavior is another reason to contact your veterinarian promptly: pain or another medical problem may contribute to a behavior change. There is no universal severity scale or timetable that determines when a dog is “bad enough” for help. A possible bite concern is enough to ask for guidance.
Start with a veterinarian
Book a veterinary assessment, especially if the behavior is new, has worsened, or appears alongside changes in your dog’s health or handling tolerance. A veterinarian can assess possible medical contributors, diagnose and treat medical and behavioral problems, and prescribe medication when appropriate. Ask whether your dog would benefit from referral to a veterinary behaviorist or another qualified behavior professional. AVSAB’s professional guidance explains the role of veterinary care in behavior cases.

| Professional | What they can contribute | When to consider them |
|---|---|---|
| Veterinarian (DVM or VMD in the US) | Can diagnose and treat medical and behavioral problems and prescribe medication. | Start here for possible medical causes, a new behavior change, or questions about diagnosis and treatment. |
| Board-certified veterinary behaviorist (DACVB) | A veterinarian who is board-certified as a specialist in animal behavior. | Ask about referral for complex or serious aggression, medical-behavior questions, or a case needing specialist assessment. |
| Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) or PhD behaviorist | Can contribute behavior expertise but cannot prescribe; commonly works with a veterinarian. | May be part of a team for behavior assessment and a plan, with veterinary care where needed. |
| Reward-based trainer | Can support training and implementation of a behavior plan; should collaborate with the veterinarian and refer when the case needs other expertise. | Consider one who has experience with aggression and is clear about methods and limits. |
AVSAB membership alone does not establish an individual’s qualifications or expertise. Verify the person’s credentials, experience with cases like yours, and willingness to coordinate with your veterinarian. AVSAB’s directory can help identify listed professionals in the United States, but confirm current listings and credentials directly.
What to do while arranging help
Prevent situations in which your dog could reach someone while you wait for an assessment. Choose management based on your home, the people involved, and the dog’s behavior; do not treat a single example as a protocol that fits every case.

- For visitors, consider keeping the dog securely separated during the busy arrivals and departures. A safe room may be more appropriate than exposure to guests.
- Do not ask visitors to approach, pet, feed, or test the dog. If a professional recommends controlled exposure, follow their case-specific instructions, which may include keeping distance and using a leash.
- Keep children and other people away from situations that trigger the behavior. Do not rely on warnings such as growling as a substitute for preventing access.
- Tell the veterinarian and behavior professional what happened, when it happens, who is present, and what seems to precede it. Do not recreate a dangerous incident just to gather information.
AVSAB’s visitor example includes separating a dog during high-risk arrivals and departures, with any controlled exposure tailored to the case. See its guidance for owners.
Should you use a muzzle?
A basket muzzle may be one part of a bite-prevention plan in some situations; it is not a cure for aggression and does not make every interaction safe. AVSAB notes that basket styles can permit panting, drinking, and taking treats. Its muzzle-training guidance recommends gradual, positive introduction rather than forcing a muzzle onto a distressed dog.

Ask directly about methods, experience, collaboration, and limits. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods and says aversive methods should not be used. Its position applies to aggression cases as well as other behavior concerns.

Avoid professionals who rely on pain, intimidation, physical corrections, or flooding—forcing a dog to endure a frightening situation—or who promise guaranteed improvement. AVSAB’s 2021 position statement says: “Animals with challenging behavior disorders such as aggression should be treated with effective, compassionate, and humane methods of training, rather than with ‘a heavy hand’. There are no exceptions to this standard.” Read AVSAB’s position statements.
Can a dog that has bitten someone be helped?
A bite history makes professional assessment and careful safety management especially important; it does not, by itself, establish what the dog’s future will be. The plan and likely outcomes depend on the dog, the context, and the available management. A responsible professional should assess the case rather than guarantee a fix or recovery timeline.
Local rules on bite reporting, liability, and containment vary. For obligations that apply where you live, contact the relevant local authority or seek advice from a qualified legal professional.
