If your dog has an obvious fracture, cannot stand or walk without help, or is limping after major trauma such as being hit by a car, contact an emergency veterinary hospital now. For an acute limp or pain that does not settle within an hour, seek urgent veterinary advice; gradual or recurring stiffness also deserves a veterinary appointment rather than being dismissed as normal aging.
Choose the right level of care
| When | Signs | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency now | Obvious fracture; inability to stand or walk without assistance; limp following major trauma, such as being hit by a car. | Call an emergency veterinary hospital and arrange careful transport. |
| Urgent assessment | Acute pain or limping that does not resolve in less than an hour; pain when the neck or back is touched; limping even though the dog can still stand or walk. | Contact an urgent-care veterinarian promptly. These are VCA urgent-care triage recommendations; follow local veterinary advice and service availability. VCA: Urgent Care for Your Pet |
| Contact your regular veterinarian | Gradual, intermittent, worsening, or recurring stiffness or mobility changes without the emergency signs above. | Arrange an evaluation. If symptoms worsen or you are unsure how quickly your dog needs care, call a veterinary clinic for guidance. |
VCA’s first-aid guidance says to seek veterinary care if lameness persists for more than 24 hours, but that is not a reason to wait when pain is significant, acute, or otherwise concerning. The urgent-care page sets a shorter threshold for acute limping. VCA: First Aid for Limping Dogs
What to do while arranging care
- Restrict activity: avoid running, jumping, stairs, and unnecessary walks. Do not force your dog to walk to see whether the limp improves.
- Note when the problem began, which leg seems affected, whether unusual activity or trauma came first, and whether the signs have improved or worsened.
- Observe your dog’s natural movement if it happens safely; do not manipulate a painful limb, neck, or back.
- If your dog is comfortable and it is safe, visually check the toes, pads, and nails for an obvious wound or foreign object. Stop if your dog shows pain or resists. A painful dog may bite, and moving a fracture or dislocation can make pain or injury worse.
- For swelling that might be associated with a sprain, bruise, or tendonitis, VCA’s first-aid article mentions applying an ice pack for 15 minutes and consulting a veterinarian. This is limited first-aid advice, not a diagnosis or treatment plan, and should not delay care.
How gradual stiffness can show up
A dog may have a mobility problem without an obvious sudden limp. Watch for trouble rising, reluctance to use stairs or jump, slower walks, less play, or changes in posture. These can be signs of osteoarthritis or another condition; age alone does not make them harmless. Arrange a veterinary evaluation and, if useful, take a short video of your dog walking or getting up to show the veterinarian. VCA: Osteoarthritis in Dogs
Why limping or stiffness needs an examination
Limping is a sign, not a diagnosis. Acute causes can include a broken nail, soft-tissue strain or sprain, joint injury, fracture, or dislocation. Ongoing or intermittent lameness may be associated with osteoarthritis, limb or spinal deformities, neurologic disorders, chronic soft-tissue injury, or cancer. Some joint, nerve, tendon, and ligament problems have no visible external sign, so a normal-looking paw does not rule out a problem. VCA: Lameness in Dogs

This support improves muscle elasticity, making it ideal for dog knee braces for back leg discomfort and mobility support.
- SUPPORTS RECOVERY & CONTROLLED MOVEMENT- Helps reduce strain during light activity while allowing natural motion. Ideal for dogs with knee instability, it helps prevent injury from worsening, offering reliable support as dog braces for back leg during rehabilitation.Improves movement and strengthens motor function for an active lifestyle
A veterinarian may ask when the limp began, what activity preceded it, and how it has changed, then perform physical, orthopedic, and neurologic examinations. Depending on the findings, testing may include radiographs, blood or urine tests, testing for tick-borne disease, joint-fluid analysis, or advanced imaging; not every dog needs every test. Treatment depends on the cause and may involve restricted exercise, medication, surgery, or rehabilitation. VCA notes that “Sedation can also make the process less stressful for your dog, especially if they are in pain” in its article on lameness.
