How to make a safe retreat
Set up a quiet, low-traffic, dog-proof area where your dog can rest without being approached. Make food and water available and provide bedding and suitable comfort items. A room, a gated area, or a crate the dog is comfortable entering can work; the important thing is that the space stays calm and the dog can choose to use it. A gate can help keep visitors or other household members from crowding the retreat.

Keep the first days quiet and predictable
- Limit visitors and new people, and keep household activity and noise low.
- Skip busy outings such as dog parks and pet stores while your dog is settling in.
- Keep a consistent schedule for meals and bathroom breaks, and note changes in appetite, drinking, and elimination.
- Plan introductions to resident pets gradually rather than expecting everyone to meet at once.
- Speak softly and let the dog initiate contact. If you offer a treat, toss it so they can take it and retreat without approaching your hand.
- Watch body language. Stop or increase distance if the dog seems uncomfortable.
Food should not become a way to coax a frightened dog closer than they want to be. Wisconsin Humane Society cautions that this can leave a dog feeling trapped.

Let your dog choose whether to interact
Don’t force greetings, petting, play, or socialization. Give your dog the option to approach and the freedom to move away. When they are ready for new people, objects, or settings, introduce them gradually and pair exposure with positive experiences. Wisconsin Humane Society recommends positive-reinforcement support. If your dog shows forward-moving aggression, stop the interaction and seek professional help rather than trying to push through it.
