If your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, is bleeding heavily, is having repeated seizures, may have eaten something poisonous, or cannot urinate, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately. Routine check-ups are for pets who are stable. For a new or worrying symptom that is not clearly an emergency, call your regular vet for triage rather than trying to diagnose it at home.
This is general guidance for dogs and cats, not a diagnosis. If you are unsure, call your veterinarian or nearest emergency hospital and describe what you are seeing.
How do I decide whether to book a check-up, call my vet, or go to emergency?
| What is happening | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your pet is stable and you want preventive care, vaccinations, age or lifestyle advice, or monitoring of an ongoing condition. | Book a routine visit on the schedule your veterinarian recommends. |
| A symptom is new, persistent, worsening, or concerning, but you do not see an obvious emergency sign. | Call your regular veterinarian promptly for individualized triage. Explain the symptom and ask how soon your pet should be seen. |
| Your pet has a serious warning sign such as difficulty breathing, collapse, severe bleeding, suspected poisoning, or inability to urinate. | Contact an emergency clinic immediately and arrange urgent care. Call ahead if feasible, but do not delay to research symptoms online. |
There is no single waiting-time rule that fits every symptom. Severity, how quickly it began, whether it is getting worse, repetition, your pet’s age and health, and species-specific risks all matter.
Which signs mean my pet needs emergency care?
AAHA and VCA list a range of conditions that may require immediate veterinary assessment. If you see a severe sign or your pet’s condition is deteriorating, call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital now.

- Collapse or altered responsiveness: fainting, unresponsiveness, unusual confusion, or a sudden change in mental state.
- Seizures: ongoing, repeated, or prolonged episodes need urgent assessment. Contact a veterinarian after a seizure even if it has stopped.
- Major injury or bleeding: severe bleeding, a serious wound, a suspected fracture, or significant trauma. Pets can look deceptively well after an accident and still have internal injuries.
- Sudden severe weakness, paralysis, or extreme pain.
- A swollen or painful abdomen with retching, or persistent or repeated vomiting or diarrhea—especially if there is blood, weakness, or lethargy.
- Serious eye injury or a sudden, severe change affecting the eye.
- Suspected poison exposure or ingestion of an unknown substance or foreign object.
- Repeated attempts to urinate with little or no urine, particularly in a male cat.
- Other urgent situations such as heatstroke, or labor that is not progressing.
A single mild stomach upset is not automatically an emergency in every pet. Repetition, severity, blood, other symptoms, age, and your pet’s overall condition change the level of concern; call your veterinarian if you are unsure.
What should I do while arranging emergency care?
Call with the key details
Tell the clinic your pet’s species and age, what you observed, when it began, whether it is worsening, any relevant medical conditions, and possible exposures. Ask where to go and follow the clinic’s directions. Local emergency facilities have different hours and intake arrangements, so call the receiving clinic when possible.

If you suspect poisoning
Call a veterinarian immediately. Keep the product container or packaging to show the clinic, if you can do so without delaying care. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. Poisoning signs vary and can include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, collapse, or skin damage.
If your pet is having a seizure or is injured
During a seizure, move nearby hazards away if it is safe, and keep your hands away from your pet’s mouth. For an injured animal, handle cautiously: pain and fear can cause even a normally gentle pet to bite or scratch. First aid may help while you arrange care, but it is not a replacement for veterinary treatment. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Pet First Aid brochure (2023) puts it this way: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”

Transport safely
Use a carrier for a cat or small pet if appropriate, and keep an injured animal as still and secure as you can. Bring relevant medical records and information about the onset of symptoms, possible exposures, and anything you have already tried. Do not let paperwork or payment research postpone urgent care; once an emergency patient is stabilized, follow up with your regular veterinarian as directed.
What is a routine veterinary check-up for?
A wellness visit is preventive care for a pet who is stable. AAHA recommends at least one routine veterinary visit each year, with more frequent visits for senior pets and pets with chronic health conditions. Your veterinarian can tailor the schedule to your animal’s age, lifestyle, risks, and health history.

A typical exam may include an assessment of the eyes, ears, mouth, skin and coat, heart and lungs, abdomen, joints, and nervous system. Screening tests may also reveal concerns—such as changes in kidney function or blood-cell counts—that cannot be identified from a physical exam alone. Regular visits help establish a baseline and may catch problems owners miss because pets can hide pain or illness; neither an exam nor a particular test schedule is identical for every animal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I prepare before an emergency?
- Keep your regular veterinarian’s after-hours instructions somewhere easy to find.
- Identify the nearest emergency clinic and plan how you would get there.
- Know where your pet’s medical records are, and be ready to describe symptoms, timing, possible exposures, and remedies already tried.
- Check the emergency facility’s payment policy and understand any existing pet insurance coverage in advance.
Preparation can make it easier to act quickly, but no supply or administrative step should delay urgent treatment.
