Introduce a cat and dog in stages: set up separate spaces, let them get used to each other’s scent, then arrange short, supervised meetings at a distance. Keep the dog on a loose lead, give the cat safe escape routes, and move forward only while both animals remain calm. There is no single timetable; their behavior should guide the pace.
1. Set up separate spaces and protect essential resources
Before the animals meet, prepare a quiet area where the cat can reach food, water, litter, and resting places. Arrange the home so neither animal has to pass the other to get to its essentials. A gate can help limit access while allowing the cat to use its space; ASPCA adoption guidance also recommends a quiet area, gates, and time to adjust, and cautions against forcing interaction with other pets (ASPCA guidance on bringing a new dog home).
Plan retreats for both animals. The cat should have hiding places and elevated spots where the dog cannot reach. For a kitten, cushions or stools can provide steps to higher places. The dog should also be able to move away rather than being cornered or expected to endure prolonged attention.
2. Let them get used to each other’s scent first
Before any face-to-face contact, exchange bedding or let each animal investigate a cotton glove rubbed on the other. Notice how each responds, but treat scent reactions only as clues about readiness: they cannot guarantee how either animal will behave during a meeting. 3. Arrange calm, supervised meetings at a distance
Give both animals physical and mental activity beforehand so they are more likely to be settled. Use a well-fitting collar or body harness and keep the dog on a loose lead. Start far enough apart that both can remain relaxed, and reward quiet behavior. A calm activity can help keep the meeting low-pressure.
Stay present and attentive throughout. Do not hold or push the cat toward the dog, or otherwise require either animal to interact. Let them observe one another without closing the distance unless both remain comfortable.

4. End a session if either animal becomes excited
If either animal becomes excitable, gently and positively end the session and give them time to calm down before another attempt. Do not punish, force contact, or treat one calm meeting as proof that the next will go well.
Rewards can help teach the dog to look toward or move toward you on cue, making it easier to redirect attention. Resume at a distance and pace at which both animals can stay relaxed.

5. Keep them separate when you cannot supervise
Continue to protect each animal’s access to food, water, litter, and resting places, including between meetings. Use separate spaces or a gate when you are not actively supervising. International Cat Care advises not leaving a dog and kitten alone together until you are satisfied they are safe together. A gate is a management aid, not proof that direct, unsupervised contact is safe.
Do not leave them alone together until you are confident they are safe in one another’s presence. Keep supervising and managing access as needed; the cat should never have to pass the dog to reach essential resources.

How long does it take for a cat and dog to get along?
There is no universal number of days or meetings. The guidance describes a gradual process rather than a fixed schedule. Let calm, relaxed behavior—not a deadline—determine whether to continue, pause, or take a step back.
A dog that has lived happily with cats, or a kitten with positive experience around dogs, may find the introduction easier, but prior experience does not guarantee a particular outcome. Take extra care if the dog has a history of chasing or herding, which may make it more inclined to pursue the cat.

When should you get professional help?
If a kitten is timid, anxious, or not coping with the process, International Cat Care advises against continuing socialization or habituation without expert guidance. Contact your veterinarian, who can advise you and refer you to an appropriately qualified behaviorist or trainer if needed.
