Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHelp an older dog settle by making the new home safe, quiet and predictable: bring familiar bedding and toys, keep meals and outdoor breaks on a familiar schedule, and let the dog explore gradually. Adjust the layout for the dog’s mobility, and ask a veterinarian about persistent anxiety, pain or other health changes. There is no reliable calendar deadline for an individual dog to feel at home.
Before the move, prepare your dog and the home
Keep familiar routines and belongings
Dogs often find comfort in routine, and changes during a move can be stressful for some, according to Cornell University’s moving guidance. Keep mealtimes, walks or outdoor breaks, and time together as consistent as practical. Bring the dog’s own bed, blankets and toys rather than replacing them all at once.
During packing, Cornell suggests offering at least three uninterrupted interaction periods a day, each lasting 10–20 minutes. That is practical moving advice, not a universal requirement. If packing unsettles your dog, give them a quiet room with familiar toys; a suitable chew, food puzzle or licking mat may also help occupy them.
Update identification and plan for anxiety
Update the address on your dog’s ID tag and microchip records before the move. If anxiety is pronounced, talk with your veterinarian in advance rather than starting medication on your own. Cornell advises that event-based medication be trialed at home under veterinary direction so you can monitor for side effects before a stressful event.

A crate is optional, not a requirement for a safe move. If you plan to use one, introduce it gradually and positively beforehand. Cornell cautions that a crate may not suit a dog with separation anxiety or distress when confined.
Keep moving day calm and secure
Open doors, unfamiliar people, moving equipment and loose hazards can create escape or injury risks. Arrange a trusted sitter if appropriate, or set up a quiet room with familiar bedding, toys and treats while belongings are being moved. At the new home, secure exits and clear hazards such as cords, glass and nails before allowing the dog to explore.

Check that the room has water and a comfortable resting place, and make sure everyone helping knows not to open the door casually.
Set up the new home around an older dog’s needs
Make essentials easy to reach
Choose a quiet, low-traffic spot for food and water, and place the resting area where the dog can relax without being cut off from household life. Think through the distance and route between resting, eating, drinking and toileting areas. Keep access limited at first if the home is busy or unfamiliar, then allow calm exploration at the dog’s pace rather than taking the dog on a forced tour.

Account for arthritis and mobility limits
A senior dog may need a different layout from a younger dog. Cornell specifically notes that dogs with arthritis or mobility issues may need a home without many stairs. Consider the dog’s actual ability to move between rooms, reach outdoor toileting areas and get to a comfortable resting place.
If a ramp seems relevant, treat it as an optional aid to assess for the dog and the space, not an automatic purchase or a solution tested by Cornell. A veterinarian or rehabilitation professional can advise on individual mobility needs. The familiar bed or blanket may be more useful during the transition than new bedding.

Consider noise, exits and outdoor access
When choosing or arranging a home, consider activity and noise, safe access to outdoor toileting, and the demands of the route in and out. Cornell notes that apartment hallways, elevators, traffic and neighborhood conditions may matter for some dogs. Match the setup to your dog’s mobility and comfort rather than assuming every senior dog has the same limitations.

Introduce people, animals and rooms slowly
Let the dog investigate unfamiliar parts of the home gradually. If the dog is newly adopted or will be meeting household members or other animals, introduce them in manageable steps rather than all at once. Texas A&M’s guidance on senior-dog adoption also recommends gradual introductions to the household and unfamiliar rooms.
Practice short absences
After the dog has had a chance to settle, build alone-time in small steps, starting with very short absences. A friend, neighbor or sitter can check in if you need to be away longer. Cornell also suggests using a camera as one way to monitor how a dog responds when alone.
How long does it take a senior dog to adjust?
There is no established timetable that predicts when a particular senior dog will feel settled. Texas A&M’s senior-adoption article gives around three weeks as a rough adjustment estimate. The American Kennel Club’s general adult-dog guidance says a dog may seem settled after three weeks but can take about three months to fit into household routines. Neither estimate is a guarantee or a senior-specific study result.
Focus on whether your dog is gradually becoming more comfortable with the home and its routines, not on reaching a deadline. If anxiety persists or worsens, or you notice pain or other health concerns, ask your veterinarian for advice. A change in behavior is useful information, not evidence that the dog is being difficult.

For a newly adopted senior dog, Texas A&M recommends a veterinary examination soon after adoption. An exam can help you discuss the dog’s individual health and mobility needs with a veterinarian. For any senior dog, involve the veterinarian when anxiety, pain or health changes raise concern; medication decisions should be made with that clinician.
