Meet the Pelican Spiders: Beak-Like Hunters from a Spider Lineage Older Than Dinosaurs

Pelican spiders get their name from beak-like jaws, not a bird-shaped body. Their spider lineage predates dinosaurs and persisted through the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs.

The “bird-like” spiders in this story are pelican spiders, members of the family Archaeidae. Their name comes from an unusual outline: a narrow body and long, forward-held jaws can suggest a pelican’s bill. They are not literally shaped like birds, and the phrase “survived the dinosaurs” describes the persistence of the spider lineage—not unchanged modern species living since the dinosaur age.

What is a pelican spider?

Pelican spiders are spiders in the family Archaeidae. The name refers to their distinctive anatomy, especially their elongated chelicerae—the paired mouthparts that bear the fangs—and the way they hold them out in front of the body. Together with the narrow body region, those features can evoke a long beak.

That resemblance is a visual comparison, not a claim that the spider has a bird’s body plan. Pelican spiders are spiders, and the “pelican” label describes their profile.

Why are they compared to birds?

The striking feature is the distance between the spider’s main body and its forward-projecting jaws. From the side, the outline may look crane-like or like a bird with a long bill. The comparison is limited to that silhouette; it does not mean the spider resembles a bird in size, feathers, or behavior.

How do pelican spiders hunt?

A 2025 Daily Galaxy report describes pelican spiders as active hunters that follow silk trails, often leading to other spiders. The report’s account is secondary, so these behavior details should be understood as what that article describes rather than as independently confirmed here.

Their prey is other spiders, not birds. The beak-like jaws are part of the spider’s anatomy and hunting equipment; the bird comparison is not a statement about what it eats.

Did spiders live with dinosaurs—and survive their extinction?

Yes, spiders as a lineage predate dinosaurs and persisted through the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous that eliminated non-avian dinosaurs. A 2007 review by David Penney and Paul A. Selden reports that the oldest known spider fossil at the time was Devonian, about 390 million years old, and says spiders survived the mass extinction that eliminated dinosaurs and many other groups. The date refers to the fossil cited in that review, not to a pelican spider fossil.

This is a story of lineage persistence, not proof that today’s pelican spider species have existed unchanged since the age of dinosaurs. Calling an animal a “living fossil” can be catchy, but by itself it does not establish that its anatomy has remained the same for a particular number of millions of years. The 2025 Daily Galaxy article makes a claim about resemblance to fossils more than 165 million years old, but that precise age and comparison are not established by the sources cited here.

There is one important terminology detail: birds are living theropod dinosaurs in modern evolutionary classification. The Australian Museum explains that “Birds are actually specialised coelurosaur theropods.” So the extinction relevant to this story is the one that ended the non-avian dinosaurs, not every dinosaur lineage.

Is a pelican spider the same as a bird-dropping spider?

No. The shared word “bird” can cause confusion, but these are different spiders and different kinds of resemblance.

Spider What the name or comparison refers to What the cited source says
Pelican spider (Archaeidae) Long, forward-held jaws and body outline reminiscent of a bird’s bill The 2025 Daily Galaxy report describes this anatomy and reports silk-trail hunting.
Bird-dropping spider (Celaenia excavata) Camouflage resembling bird droppings The Australian Museum says it captures male moths using a pheromone.

The bird-dropping spider is not the animal meant by “pelican spider,” and its resemblance is camouflage rather than beak-like anatomy.

What “survived the dinosaurs” really means

The phrase is dramatic shorthand for an evolutionary timeline. Spider fossils and spider-lineage history reach far earlier than dinosaurs; spider lineages persisted through the end-Cretaceous extinction; and living pelican spiders are modern members of that broader lineage. Those facts do not show that the same species—or an unchanged body form—has endured for more than 165 million years.
