A December 2024 report said a white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) was seen near Lepe in Hampshire. It credited Jordan Callaghan, a member of the Daily Echo Camera Club, with photographing the bird. The observation has not been independently confirmed by a primary or contemporaneous local record in the sources available here, so it is best understood as a reported sighting—not proof that a Hampshire population has returned.
What was reported near Lepe?
Indian Defence Review published its account on December 15, 2024, saying a white-tailed eagle had been seen near Lepe in Hampshire. The article credited Jordan Callaghan, a member of the Daily Echo Camera Club, with photographs and said the bird flew toward him. Those details are claims in that report; they are not independently verified here through the original images, metadata, or a local sighting record. Read the December 15, 2024 report.
The report framed the bird’s presence as part of the species’ recovery. That is an interpretation of one reported observation, not evidence on its own of breeding, a resident population, or an established return to Hampshire.
How does the Lepe report relate to eagle reintroductions?
White-tailed eagle recovery in England includes reintroduction efforts, but the reported Lepe observation and a later Exmoor release plan are separate developments. The later report does not establish where the Lepe bird came from or confirm its movements.

| Reported sighting | Near Lepe, Hampshire; published December 15, 2024 | A white-tailed eagle was seen; Jordan Callaghan was credited with photographs. | A secondary report; no primary or contemporaneous local confirmation was identified here. |
| Planned release programme | Exmoor; reported May 13, 2026 | The Times of India said Natural England approved a plan led by Forestry England and the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation to release up to 20 birds over three years, with satellite tags planned. | A newspaper account of an approved plan, not evidence that all releases occurred. No primary licence or project page was obtained here. |
The Exmoor details come from The Times of India’s May 13, 2026 report. The proposed number and timeline describe that plan, not the size or status of a Hampshire population.
Why has the Exmoor plan prompted concern?
The Times of India report relayed farmer concerns about possible livestock losses and said the National Sheep Association wanted an impact assessment. Those are stakeholder concerns reported in connection with the Exmoor plan; they are not proof that eagles caused all reported lamb losses. The Lepe sighting should not be treated as evidence for or against those claims.

How large is a white-tailed eagle?
The two reports give conflicting maximum wingspan figures: Indian Defence Review says up to 2.5 metres, while The Times of India says up to 2.4 metres. Because those secondary sources disagree and no primary species reference is established here, neither figure should be presented as definitive. The 2024 report also attributes a territory-size figure of up to 70 square kilometres to Hampshire Wildlife Trust, but does not provide a direct source for that claim.
