Koi are domesticated ornamental carp, bred for their colors and patterns. The scientific name varies between references: some classify koi as Cyprinus carpio, while a USGS profile uses Cyprinus rubrofuscus and describes the taxonomy as ambiguous.
What makes a koi a carp?
“Carp” is the broader category; “koi” refers to ornamental carp kept for their appearance. The Smithsonian National Zoo describes koi as “colorful, ornamental versions of the common carp.” Their familiar colors and patterns reflect ornamental breeding, rather than a distinction that makes them something other than carp.
The Smithsonian says modern Japanese koi are believed to date to early 19th-century Japan, where rice farmers kept and bred wild carp with unusual colors. That account describes the development of modern koi, not a settled explanation of every koi population’s ancestry.
Why do sources give koi different scientific names?
References do not agree on one species-level label. The names below show how the cited institutions describe koi; they are not a consensus classification.

| Source | Name or classification used | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species profile | Cyprinus rubrofuscus | Describes koi as domesticated ornamental carp and says their taxonomic status is ambiguous, with origins uncertain. |
| Smithsonian National Zoo, “Japanese koi” | Cyprinus carpio | Describes koi as colorful ornamental versions of common carp. |
| USGS common carp profile | Ornamental strains or varieties of Cyprinus carpio | Notes that some authorities recognize koi within C. carpio. |
| USGS Fish Health Program | Cyprinus carpio koi | Uses this name for koi. |
The difference is about scientific naming and classification, not whether koi belong to the everyday category of carp. The cited sources do not resolve the underlying ancestry or nomenclature dispute, so it would be too strong to claim that all authorities agree on a single species name.
