A video reported by PerthNow on 24 January 2024 showed a tiger shark chasing a turtle toward shore at Monkey Mia, in northern Western Australia. The report describes the shark splashing as it pushed back into the ocean, but it does not say whether the turtle was caught or what happened to it. The publication date is not confirmed as the date the footage was filmed.
What happened at Monkey Mia?
PerthNow’s report, by Kayla Sellwood, said the footage was posted on Tuesday to Snorkelling Western Australia’s Facebook page. It described a tiger shark quickly pursuing a turtle toward shore before splashing as it moved back into the ocean. The report called the moment an “extremely close encounter,” but did not identify the beachgoer or provide their account. PerthNow’s 24 January 2024 report does not establish when the clip was filmed.
Did the shark catch the turtle?
The report does not say. It provides no confirmed outcome for the turtle, so it cannot establish whether the animal was caught, injured, or later rescued. Nor does it report an official response, emergency action, or beach closure connected to the footage.
Are there sharks at Monkey Mia?
Monkey Mia is an attraction within Shark Bay Marine Park, a marine environment that includes sharks and turtles. The Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) explicitly advises visitors to be aware of sharks in the water. That standing safety advice is not evidence of a current sighting or a present beach closure. DBCA’s Shark Bay Marine Park information describes the park and its marine life; its Monkey Mia visitor information covers the local attraction and water-use guidance.

What should visitors do?
DBCA says swimming and snorkelling at Monkey Mia are allowed outside the dolphin interaction area. Visitors should follow activity boundaries, stay alert to sharks and boats, and swim, dive, or snorkel with at least one other person. Its visitor guide, whose information is current to July 2024, also recommends reef sandals when wading because of stonefish and stingrays; that footwear advice concerns those hazards, not shark protection. See the Monkey Mia information and DBCA visitor guide.
For a shark sighting in Western Australia, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) says to contact Water Police on 9442 8600. Reports can prompt action such as a beach closure. Check official DPIRD sighting-report guidance and current SharkSmart alerts for current activity; the 2024 news footage is not a live warning.
