He joined four female elephants to complete Monarto’s founding herd of five.
When did Putra Mas leave Perth Zoo, and where did he go?
Perth Zoo says Putra Mas began his journey on 3 November 2025. Monarto Safari Park reported his arrival two days later, on 5 November. The transfer was the final move in Perth Zoo’s transition away from keeping elephants at its inner-city site. Perth Zoo’s retrospective and Monarto’s arrival report give the respective dates.
Putra Mas travelled in a custom-built crate with keepers and veterinary staff. Perth Zoo says the insulated, air-conditioned crates had temperature gauges and cameras. The elephants were crate-trained so they could choose to enter and become familiar with the crate as a safe space; keepers also trained them to lift their legs voluntarily for tethering during transport.
Why did Perth Zoo move its elephants?
Perth Zoo has said its inner-city site does not have enough space to appropriately care for a full elephant herd. The zoo also said that after matriarch Tricia died in 2022, aged 65, Permai needed the company of other female elephants. Perth Zoo had announced in 2018 that its elephants would move on.

Monarto’s regional elephant program is intended to provide a permanent home for elephants that had lived singly or in pairs, with opportunities for social contact. Those are the institutions’ stated reasons for the move, not an independent comparative assessment of welfare at the two zoos. Monarto’s elephant habitat opened in 2024; Perth Zoo describes it as almost as large as the entire Perth Zoo site, with separate barns for females and the bull.
How did the transfer fit into Monarto’s herd plan?
Putra Mas’s move followed the arrival of the other founding elephants. Permai moved from Perth Zoo in January 2025 on a roughly 40-hour, 2,700-kilometre journey, according to Monarto. Pak Boon and Tang Mo arrived from Taronga Zoo Sydney in April 2025. Putra Mas’s arrival completed the group of four females and one bull, Monarto said in November 2025.

Arrival did not mean immediate integration with the herd. Monarto said its priority was to let Putra Mas settle and then introduce him gradually to Burma, Permai, Pak Boon and Tang Mo at the animals’ pace. Perth Zoo keepers stayed at Monarto for several weeks to share care routines and cues.
In a later update dated 25 February 2026, Monarto reported that Permai and Tang Mo had their first fence-free introduction in Habitat 3. That milestone concerned those two females; it was not a report of Putra Mas joining them. Monarto’s elephant updates provide the park’s subsequent herd milestones.

What did Monarto report about Putra Mas’s first days?
Monarto’s 6 November 2025 arrival report said Putra Mas explored his barn and adjoining yards, ate and drank, and slept on his first night. These were the institutions’ early observations, not a long-term or independent welfare assessment.
John Lemon, Perth Zoo’s Director of Life Sciences, said in the report that Putra Mas “travelled incredibly well, responded positively throughout the journey, and was even sleeping comfortably on his first night at Monarto Safari Park.” Andrew Coers, Monarto’s Manager of Elephants, said he was “relaxed, alert and straight into exploring his new space, as well as eating and drinking” after stepping out of the crate.

Can visitors see Putra Mas at Monarto?
Monarto’s November 2025 visitor FAQ says visitors can reach the elephant habitat on foot or by the Zu-loop bus and are likely to see at least one elephant on a given day. It does not guarantee a sighting of Putra Mas: the elephants can choose to spend time in barns or off-habitat spaces. The same FAQ said the visitor precinct was still being developed and was expected to open in 2026, but did not give a confirmed opening date. Check Monarto’s visitor FAQ for current access and opening information before planning a visit.

In its November 2025 FAQ, Monarto said the immediate focus was care, settling and building a cohesive herd, not breeding. The park said any future direction would be referred to the Zoo and Aquarium Association’s regional Species Management Program.

Monarto also said its elephant project fundraising had involved more than 4,700 South Australians and raised over $2.4 million, according to Zoos SA Chief Executive Dr Phil Ainsley in the November 2025 arrival report. In an August 2025 update, Zoos SA described Asian elephants as Endangered and said fewer than 50,000 remained in the wild; that figure is the organization’s estimate as reported at that date, rather than a separately cited population assessment. The park’s elephant updates carry its project and herd announcements.
