If the title refers to the July 2023 attack at Wangi Falls in Litchfield National Park, the victim survived: 7NEWS reported that a 67-year-old man had non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and back and was transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital in stable condition. The available report does not establish that he gave a first-person account.
What happened at Wangi Falls?
On 11 July 2023, 7NEWS reported that a 67-year-old man was attacked by a crocodile while visiting Wangi Falls in Litchfield National Park. The report said his injuries to his arm and back were non-life-threatening. He was treated at Batchelor medical clinic and then transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital in stable condition. 7NEWS
The identity match is not certain from the available reporting. The details above describe the likely Wangi Falls incident; they should not be taken as confirmation that it is the person meant by every version of the headline.
Did the victim tell his story?
No first-person recollection from the man is established in the available report. 7NEWS included an account from Senior Constable Taneka Starr, a Tasmanian police officer, about her family’s efforts to get out of the water and help. That is a rescuer’s account, not the victim’s own description of the attack.

Why other Northern Territory crocodile stories can be confused with this one
The Wangi Falls incident was not the same event as the fatal 2009 attack on 11-year-old Briony Goodsell. ABC News reported that she was taken by a crocodile while swimming at a waterhole near her home, about 60 kilometres outside Darwin. Her mother, Charlene O’Sullivan, later advocated public education, relocating problem crocodiles and harvesting eggs, while warning that wider culling could create a false sense of security. ABC News, 19 April 2024
That ABC report also covered crocodile-safety policy and included a separate discussion of attacks and management. Its context should not be read as an explanation of why the Wangi Falls attack happened.

What the 2024 safety debate does—and does not—say
ABC News reported that the Northern Territory crocodile population had risen from about 500 adults in 1971 to more than 100,000, and that government scientists in Queensland and Western Australia put the fatality rate at one every three years. ABC also reported an increase in non-fatal attacks as people interacted with more crocodiles. These are figures and observations from the 2024 policy report, not statistics specific to Wangi Falls or evidence of the outcome for this particular man.
In the same policy discussion, Crocodile Specialist Group chair Grahame Webb argued that culling would not improve public safety and said, “We spend about $1 million a year and we can’t do it.” Simon Pooley of the IUCN Human-Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence group said, “The real challenge is often human behaviour.” O’Sullivan urged people to understand where they are and make an informed decision about entering harm’s way. These comments concern broader management and risk, not the individual Wangi Falls incident.

The sources discuss different approaches—including broad culling, targeted removal of problem animals, public education and maintaining specifically advertised swimming areas—but do not establish a definitive safety ranking among them. They also do not establish current swimming access or conditions at Wangi Falls.
