North Cottesloe and The Cove reopened at 10:40 am on 23 September 2026 after the Town of Cottesloe reported no further shark sightings. The Town said a member of the public had spotted a shark about 4 m long, roughly 50 m offshore at North Cottesloe. That reopening notice is not a live status update: check the Town of Cottesloe and SharkSmart alerts before entering the water.

What happened at North Cottesloe?

In its official update on 23 September 2026, the Town of Cottesloe said a member of the public reported a 4 m shark about 50 m offshore at North Cottesloe. The Town said shark alarms were sounded at North Cottesloe and The Cove while a helicopter circled. It did not identify the shark species.

The Town’s update said: “UPDATE – 10:40am: Both beaches have been reopened as there have been no further sightings.” The 4 m and 50 m figures describe this particular reported sighting; they are not general measures of shark size, distance, or risk.

Were Cottesloe beaches still open in October?

ABC News reported on 3 October 2026 that Cottesloe beaches were open at that time. City Beach, Floreat Beach, and Swanbourne Beach remained closed after a whale carcass washed ashore at City Beach. The report said the carcass had been removed, but Curt Jenner of the Centre for Whale Research in Western Australia warned that traces could continue to attract sharks for weeks. That was an expert’s general assessment, not confirmation of a shark at Cottesloe.

The barrier is a seasonal beach installation, not a personal device or a guarantee against shark encounters.

How to check conditions before swimming

Beach status and alerts can change. The Town’s Beaches page provides local conditions and safety information. The Town says to obey closure signs and stay out of the water when a beach is closed because of a shark sighting or incident. Its local measures include warning systems at The Cove and North Cottesloe, Beach Emergency Number signs, a protected swimming enclosure, and beach patrols.

  • Use the Western Australian Government’s SharkSmart safety guidance, activity map, or SharkSmart WA app for reported sightings and tagged-shark detections.

SharkSmart says metropolitan helicopter patrols cover the coast between Mandurah and Yanchep, including Rottnest Island to the west. Its 2026/27 program page scheduled daily patrols from 26 September 2026 to 30 April 2027; patrol schedules can change by season. The same page reported $4.4 million in Western Australian Government funding for Surf Life Saving WA shark-mitigation strategies in 2026/27, supporting aerial and beach patrols, coordination, emergency responses, and a jetski response team. Those are program details, not a guarantee that a patrol is present at a particular beach or time.
