Permai, an Asian elephant who had recently moved from Perth Zoo to Monarto Safari Park, lay down to sleep for the first time since the move. Monarto described the moment as an encouraging sign that she was beginning to feel more comfortable, while emphasizing that she needed time and patience to settle in.
What happened when Permai lay down to sleep?
In a report published on 5 February 2025, PerthNow said Permai had lain down to sleep at Monarto for the first time since arriving. Elephants can sleep standing up, so lying down was notable as an adjustment milestone—not proof on its own of her overall health or welfare.
Monarto Safari Park, in a statement quoted by PerthNow, interpreted the behaviour positively: “This is an encouraging sign that Permai is beginning to feel more comfortable in her new environment, as she slowly settles in here at Monarto Safari Park and all the new sights, sounds, smells, and company that comes with it,”
Why had Permai moved to Monarto?
PerthNow reported that Permai had moved from Perth Zoo the previous week, travelling for 40 hours across the Nullarbor. The report presented Monarto as a place where she could have the company of other elephants. It also compared her new environment’s available enclosure space with the entirety of Perth Zoo; that was the newspaper’s comparison, not a measurement detailed in the story.

How were Permai and Burma adjusting to sharing space?
Monarto said keepers were creating small opportunities for Permai and Burma to interact while the elephants got used to one another and to sharing space. The park framed the transition as one that required patience and support, rather than expecting the animals to become companions immediately.

PerthNow also reported a plan for Permai’s former Perth neighbour, Putras Mas, to join her later in 2025. That was a future expectation stated in the February 2025 article; the report does not establish whether the move took place or what the elephants’ group composition is now.

The available account documents a specific moment and the park’s interpretation of it: Permai lay down to sleep after her move, and Monarto regarded this as an encouraging sign as she adjusted to a new setting and company. It does not establish a broader conclusion about her health, her long-term adjustment, or subsequent changes to the elephant group.
