A swimmer was bitten on the foot at Sandtrax Surfing Spot near Port Beach, Fremantle, on 26 March 2025. SharkSmart described the animal as a reported 1.5 m tiger shark, but ABC News relayed a witness estimate of about 80 cm; the accounts do not resolve its size. The swimmer was helped onto a boat and received treatment at a doctor’s surgery.

Where and when did the Port Beach shark bite happen?

The bite occurred at Sandtrax Surfing Spot near Port Beach in the City of Fremantle, Western Australia. SharkSmart’s alert says the bite happened at approximately 2:29 pm on Wednesday, 26 March 2025; the public report reached authorities at about 3:29 pm.

ABC News reported that the swimmer was about 40 m off the groyne when bitten. People on a recreational boat helped him out of the water. A Department of Primary Industries spokesman told ABC that “the shark continued to circle the boat at this time.”

Was it a 1.5 m tiger shark?

SharkSmart’s alert identified the animal as a reported 1.5 m tiger shark. ABC News, meanwhile, reported a witness estimate of around 80 cm. These are differing accounts, and the sources do not establish a confirmed measurement. The 1.5 m figure should therefore be treated as the reported description in the official alert, not a verified size.

How badly was the swimmer injured?

ABC News reported that the swimmer was bitten on the foot and received treatment at a doctor’s surgery. The account does not provide further detail about the injury or treatment. A DPIRD spokesman said the shark bumped the man multiple times before biting him.

What warning and advice did authorities issue?

SharkSmart’s notice advised people to take additional care at Sandtrax and Port Beach, follow any closures communicated by local government rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA, and check official SharkSmart and SLSWA channels. That notice describes the response in March 2025; it does not establish current beach access or alert status. Before visiting, check SharkSmart’s incident notice and current information from the relevant local authorities.

Was this the fatal Port Beach incident?

No. The 26 March 2025 Sandtrax bite was a separate event from the fatal Port Beach incident on 6 November 2021. SharkSmart’s archive says a 57-year-old man was reported missing after reportedly being taken by a shark in 2021. In the 2025 incident, the swimmer survived and received medical treatment. The incidents should not be conflated.

What do shark-incident figures say about risk?

Taronga Conservation Society Australia’s Australian Shark Incident Database summary, prepared in June 2025, recorded 19 reported shark-human interaction incidents across Australia in 2024: 13 classified as unprovoked bites and six as provoked incidents, with one fatality among the provoked incidents. Western Australia accounted for 10 incidents, eight involving injured people and two involving people who were uninjured. Those figures describe 2024 statewide and national totals; they are not a Port Beach risk estimate or statistics about the 2025 bite.

The database defines an unprovoked encounter as a shark in its natural habitat making a determined attempt to bite or bump a person without provocation. Its examples of provoked encounters include spearfishing and stepping on a shark. The sources cited here do not establish an incident-specific classification for the Sandtrax bite.
