Choose a bird’s housing around the species, the number of birds, and the space and activity they need—not a one-size-fits-all cage chart. Set the enclosure in a warm, draft-free place with good light and household activity, away from areas where food or drinks are prepared, served, or stored. For a permanent setup, species-specific advice from an avian veterinarian or qualified bird-care specialist is more useful than dimensions intended for temporary shelter or scientific facilities.
How to choose housing that fits your bird
A cage or flight enclosure should let the bird move safely and comfortably, use suitable perches, and engage with appropriate enrichment. The right configuration depends on species, body size, activity, and how much time the bird spends outside the enclosure. A product described as “large” or “flight” does not establish that it suits a particular bird.
- Match it to the bird: consider the species’ movement and activity needs, as well as the bird’s size.
- Account for the number of birds: more birds require enough usable space and perching access for all; furnishings should not let one bird monopolize important areas.
- Consider the purpose: permanent housing, temporary care, and transport are different uses, and guidance for one should not be applied automatically to another.
- Check construction: look for sturdy materials and secure closures appropriate to the bird. Larger birds may be able to defeat ordinary locks.
- Plan for care: consider whether the enclosure can be cleaned and whether it has room for suitable perches and enrichment.
The available guidance does not establish a universal minimum cage dimension for pet birds. If you need precise dimensions or bar spacing for a named species, seek species-specific advice rather than extrapolating from a general chart.
Where to place the enclosure
The CDC says, “Pet birds need to be housed in a warm, draft-free location.” It also recommends adequate lighting and placing the cage, perch, or enclosure near household activity. Do not house a pet bird where food or drinks are prepared, served, or stored. These recommendations do not establish a single room or temperature that is right for every species and home. Perches, enrichment, and shared access
Provide perches suited to the bird and arrange them so birds housed together have usable places to perch. Enrichment should support safe, species-appropriate activity. Depending on the bird, suitable options may include objects to manipulate or opportunities to forage; no single toy or accessory is right for all birds. Choose items with the bird’s size, safety, materials, and behavior in mind.
UK government advisory standards for animals bred, supplied, or used for scientific purposes emphasize species differences, suitable perches, enrichment, and social needs. These are welfare principles from a scientific-care context, not household pet regulations or a universal pet-housing specification. Why temporary shelter dimensions are not a permanent-care chart
The Avian Welfare Coalition’s cage guidance is for short-term shelter care while placement is pending, not long-term pet housing. Its bar-spacing recommendations are no greater than ½ inch for small birds such as parakeets and finches, no greater than ¾ inch for medium birds, and ¾ to 1½ inches for larger birds. Scientific-use standards likewise have a distinct purpose. UK guidance and USDA APHIS training material address animals in covered scientific or licensed settings; their dimensions and facility requirements should not be presented as household pet recommendations. Consider social needs individually
Many bird species are social for at least part of the year, but that does not establish that every pet bird should be paired or housed in a group. Species, compatibility, health, and individual history all matter. Ask an avian veterinarian or a specialist familiar with the species before changing a bird’s social arrangement.
