Yes—cats can recognize familiar people. Studies have found that cats distinguish their owner’s voice from unfamiliar voices and can match a familiar voice with the person’s face. But those findings do not tell us how many months or years a cat will remember someone after a separation. Researchers have not established a dependable, universal memory-duration figure.
What does research say cats remember about people?
Recognition means responding differently to something familiar than to something unfamiliar. In controlled studies, researchers look for differences in cats’ behavior when they hear a known voice or encounter a person-related cue. That is evidence of recognition; it is not a direct measurement of how long the memory lasts.
Cats can recognize an owner’s voice
In a 2013 experiment, Saito and Shinozuka studied 20 domestic cats using a habituation-dishabituation method. With the owner out of sight, researchers played recordings of three strangers calling the cat’s name, followed by a recording of the owner doing the same. The cats’ responses supported the conclusion that they distinguished the owner’s voice from unfamiliar voices. Their reactions could be subtle, rather than an obvious approach or vocalization. Read the study on owner-voice recognition.
Cats can connect a voice with a face
A 2019 study tested whether cats associated a person’s voice with that person’s face. After hearing one of two people call the cat’s name, cats were shown a human face. The study’s abstract reports that cats could predict their owner’s face after hearing the owner’s voice; the finding also included café cats. This supports recognition across two kinds of cues, not just sound alone. Read the study on cats matching voices and faces.

An owner’s voice can signal where they are
In a 2021 experiment, researchers played an owner’s voice from different speaker locations and observed cats’ responses. The results were consistent with cats representing the location of an owner they could not see. This is evidence of socio-spatial cognition—using sound to track a familiar person—not proof that cats form a human-like autobiographical narrative about that person. Read the study on cats mapping an owner’s location from voice.
How long can a cat remember its owner?
There is no reliable number of years to give. The voice and voice-face experiments tested recognition under particular conditions; they did not measure whether a cat would recognize a specific person after a defined separation lasting months or years. The sources discussed here do not establish a universal time limit for a cat’s memory of an individual.

A 2019 survey asked cat and dog owners about remembered events, but owner reports are not a controlled test of how long cats recognize a particular person. They cannot supply a precise duration that the recognition experiments did not measure. Read the owner-reported event-memory study.
Does a quiet reunion mean your cat forgot you?
No single reunion behavior can confirm that a cat remembers—or has forgotten—a person. The experiments infer recognition from behavior in controlled trials, and cats’ responses to a familiar voice may be understated. A cat that does not run over, meow, or seek contact is not taking a standardized memory test; researchers have not validated a particular greeting as proof either way.

Likewise, these studies establish recognition-related abilities, not exactly what a cat feels during a reunion or whether its memories work like human autobiographical memories. A 2015 review of cat cognition covered memory, perception, vocal recognition, attachment, and other topics, while noting that the field had relatively little research and needed a more comprehensive evidence base. A 2022 study found evidence that cats link a companion cat’s name with that cat’s face, without explicit training. It adds to evidence that cats learn social information in everyday life, but it was not a test of whether a cat remembers a former human owner or how long that memory lasts.
