To lower risk, don’t let a dog lick your mouth or face, or any cut, sore, or other broken skin. If saliva gets on your hands, wash them with soap and running water. The CDC does not give a percentage chance of infection from a dog kiss.
Can a dog’s lick make you sick?
It can expose you to germs that spread between animals and people, but exposure does not mean you will become ill. A dog may carry germs even when it looks healthy, so appearance alone cannot establish that its saliva is germ-free. The CDC overview of diseases that can spread between animals and people explains that animals can carry germs that make people sick.
The CDC’s specific advice is to avoid letting dogs lick around your mouth and face, and to keep saliva away from open wounds or broken skin. Its puppy guidance on preventing Campylobacter infection gives this advice in the context of puppies; it should not be read as evidence that every household dog or every lick causes infection.
Does the location of the lick matter?
Mouth and face
Avoid letting a dog lick your mouth or face. Be especially careful with young children, and supervise them around dogs. CDC guidance states: “Don’t let dogs lick around your mouth and face.”

Cuts, sores, and broken skin
Do not let a dog lick an open wound, cut, sore, or other broken skin. CDC guidance also says: “Don’t let dogs lick open wounds or areas with broken skin.”
Saliva on your hands
Wash your hands with soap and running water after contact with dog saliva. If soap and water are not available, CDC says to use alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol until you can wash. The CDC’s dog guidance recommends handwashing after contact with dog saliva or poop.

Who should take extra care?
CDC identifies children under five, adults 65 and older, people with weakened immune systems, and, in many cases, pregnant women as groups at higher risk for serious illness from germs spread between animals and people. For these people, avoiding face and mouth licking and keeping saliva away from broken skin are sensible precautions. Young children should be supervised around dogs.
These groups are not a prediction that a particular person will become ill from a lick. They are a reason to be more cautious about animal contact and to seek appropriate medical advice if illness occurs.

Does a healthy, vaccinated dog have germ-free saliva?
No. Routine veterinary care helps support a dog’s health, but a healthy appearance does not rule out carrying germs. Keep up with veterinary visits, discuss vaccination and parasite prevention with your veterinarian, and continue to follow hygiene precautions. These steps do not establish that saliva is germ-free.
What if your dog has already licked you?
- On your hands: Wash with soap and running water. Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if you cannot wash immediately, then wash when possible.
- On your face or around your mouth: Avoid further licking and wash the affected area. The CDC’s prevention advice is to prevent this contact; it does not say that a lick means infection will follow.
- On broken skin: Wash the area and keep the wound clean. If you are concerned, particularly if you are in a higher-risk group or feel unwell, contact a healthcare provider for advice.
If you become ill and are concerned about an infection that could be related to animal contact, tell your healthcare provider that you have a dog and describe the contact. CDC clinical guidance advises healthcare providers to consider animal contact when evaluating illness; it does not diagnose the cause of an individual’s symptoms.

Is there a percentage chance of getting sick from a dog kiss?
No reliable percentage is established in the cited CDC guidance. It does not quantify the chance of infection per lick, so a numerical estimate would be misleading. The useful distinction is where saliva contacted you, whether your skin was broken, and whether you are in a group at higher risk—not a calculated risk score.
