No—Nerf-style blasters and foam darts are not appropriate cat toys. A dart or a piece of one can be swallowed and cause an intestinal blockage. Cats do enjoy chasing moving objects, but use toys made for cat play and keep blasters and darts out of their reach.
Why foam darts are risky for cats
Foam darts are small, chewable objects, not toys designed for cats. If a cat swallows a dart or one of its parts, it may choke or develop an intestinal blockage. The dart is not established as toxic; the concern is the physical danger of swallowing it.
Beaverton Crossroads Veterinary Services describes a four-month-old kitten, Honey, who developed vomiting and an intestinal blockage after playing with a foam dart. The clinic says surgery found the dart’s plastic end. It also recounts a similar case involving another kitten shortly afterward. These are veterinary clinic anecdotes, not a measure of how often such accidents happen, but they illustrate a serious possible outcome. Read the clinic’s case report.
What to do if your cat may have swallowed a dart
Contact a veterinarian promptly if you saw your cat swallow a foam dart or part of one, or if your cat develops symptoms after a possible ingestion. Tell the clinic what may have been swallowed and when. Do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice about a known ingestion, and do not try an at-home treatment without veterinary direction.

Safer toys for chasing and pouncing
Cats benefit from play that engages stalking and pouncing without introducing loose dart pieces. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says toys can encourage exercise and cognitive enrichment, and UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine names several suitable play options.
| Play option | How to use it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cat wand toy | Move the toy to invite chasing and pouncing; supervise the session. | Inspect it for loose or damaged parts, and put it away after play. |
| Toy mouse | Offer it for supervised batting and chasing. | Check that pieces do not come loose and become small enough to swallow. |
| Ball rolled along the floor | Roll it across an open floor for the cat to chase. | Choose a size and construction that do not present small detachable parts. |
| Rolled-up paper | Roll it and let the cat bat it around under supervision. | Remove it if it tears into pieces the cat could swallow. |
| Cardboard box or ping-pong ball | Use as a simple play or exploration option while watching your cat. | Keep play away from hazards and remove anything that becomes damaged. |
These are practical options, not a controlled comparison of products. Whatever you choose, watch for chewing or damage that could create swallowable pieces. Cornell advises asking your veterinarian if you have concerns about a potential toy. Its guidance on safe toys is available at Safe toys and gifts; UC Davis lists play suggestions in Kitten Play: Managing Rough Play.

Make play safer at home
- Put blasters and all loose darts away after human play, and account for darts before letting your cat into the area.
- Inspect cat toys regularly; discard or repair damaged toys before pieces can come loose.
- Choose a play area clear of objects that could fall and places from which your cat could fall.
- Rotate toys to help keep play engaging, rather than leaving every toy out all the time.
- Supervise interactive play, especially when a toy has parts your cat can chew.
How much play is appropriate?
UC Davis’s 2019 guidance reports that studies showed kittens handled for 5–40 minutes per day had reduced levels of human-directed aggression. The page does not identify those studies, and this figure should not be treated as a universal daily prescription. Follow your cat’s cues, and ask your veterinarian about rough play that seems excessive.
