There is no single best collar or breed-wide size for every Great Pyrenees. Choose based on your dog’s measured neck, whether it can back out of a flat collar, how it behaves on leash, and whether neck pressure is a concern. A properly fitted martingale may help reduce escape risk; a well-fitted harness may be a better choice when leash pressure on the neck is a concern.
What the breed standard says—and doesn’t say—about fit
The Great Pyrenees standard describes the neck as “strongly muscled and of medium length, with minimal dewlap.” It does not prescribe a collar type or neck measurement. Measure your individual dog rather than choosing by breed name or weight. Great Pyrenees Club of America breed standard
Measure before choosing a collar
Measure at the location specified by the particular collar maker, then compare the result with that item’s sizing chart and adjustment range. AKC advises checking whether a collar can slip over the dog’s head and using a two-finger fit check: you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and the dog’s neck. Do not treat a sizing chart’s “large” label as a Great Pyrenees recommendation. For example, German Valley Rescue’s martingale guide lists a large range of 14–20 inches; that is the range on that guide’s chart, not a breed-wide neck measurement. German Valley Rescue martingale guide

Choose by your dog’s main need

When a martingale may help—and its limits
A properly fitted martingale can reduce the chance of a dog slipping out compared with a buckle collar, but it must not choke the dog. VCA advises that dogs be supervised while wearing one. Its moving loop can also catch or tangle long hair, so check your Pyrenees’ coat as well as the collar’s fit. VCA collar and harness guidance
A martingale is a management tool, not a guarantee against escape and not a substitute for leash training. If you choose one, follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions and make sure its tightened limit is safe for your dog.

When a harness is worth considering
Leash force on the neck can be a concern, particularly when a dog pulls hard. Tufts veterinary behaviorist Stephanie Borns-Weil notes that “there is a risk to the sensitive neck tissue if the dog pulls on the leash.” A harness shifts leash contact to the body, but it still needs to fit properly and be comfortable. Check more than the label
- Measured fit: Does the collar’s size range include your dog’s measurement, taken where that maker specifies?
- Escape risk: Can your dog back out of the option you are considering? A properly fitted martingale may help with this, but it does not eliminate risk.
- Leash pressure: If pulling or a neck issue is a concern, consider a harness and seek veterinary advice for a medical problem.
- Coat and comfort: Check that gear does not rub or catch in the dense, long coat.
- Putting on and removing: If a particular design offers a buckle or quick-release, verify how that specific collar works and fits.
- Supervision: Remove or manage gear during unsupervised play if it could snag; supervise a dog wearing a martingale.
What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
The Great Pyrenees rescue’s martingale recommendation is practical rescue guidance, not a controlled comparison showing that one style is best for every dog. Available sources do not establish a breed-specific neck circumference, collar-injury rate, or winning brand or model. Choose by individual measurement and use, not by an unsupported product ranking.
