Most importantly, “automatic” does not always include humidity: an incubator may turn eggs and regulate temperature automatically while still requiring you to manage moisture yourself. Compare those functions separately, and treat capacity figures as manufacturer-listed hen-egg capacities rather than a guarantee that every species or egg size will fit.
What does “fully automatic” mean in an egg incubator?
There is no single feature implied by the word “automatic.” Check the product specification for each function you care about:
- Egg turning: The machine turns eggs on a schedule. Check whether turning is programmable and can be stopped near hatch time.
- Temperature control: The incubator regulates temperature; check for a clear display and alarms as well.
- Humidity control: Some models require you to add water and manage humidity manually; others automate humidity control.
- Alerts or app monitoring: These can help you notice a setting or environmental issue, but remote access does not replace checking the actual incubation environment.
For example, Brinsea specifies automatic turning and manual humidity control for the Mini II Advance. Its Ovation Advance has programmable automatic turning and temperature control, while the Ovation EX adds automatic humidity control. Brinsea describes the EX as having “fully automatic humidity control with an integrated water pump”; that is a manufacturer product specification, not independent evidence of hatch performance. See Brinsea’s Mini II Advance specifications and Ovation range.
Do you need automatic humidity control as well as automatic turning?
Not necessarily. Automatic turning is useful if you want the incubator to handle routine egg movement. Humidity automation is a separate convenience: without it, you must follow the model’s instructions for adding water and managing humidity. Choose based on the level of monitoring and hands-on adjustment you can reliably provide; an automatic turner alone does not make humidity automatic.

#1 Best Overall
- 【STABLE TEMPERATURE】: The circulating airflow system driven by a strong fan provides a stable temperature condition for the eggs.
- 【EXTERNAL WATER REFILLING】: Refilling water without opening the incubator lid, avoid causing the interior temperature & humidty suddenly drop a lot.
- 【BUILT-IN EGG CANDLER】: A convenient way for you to observe the development of embryos, no need to buy additional egg candler.
- 【AUTOMATIC EGG TURNER】: Side-to-side turning the eggs automatically at 60 minutes interval, and also can auto-stop turning 3 days before hatching to avoid excess turning.
For a small batch, the Mini II Advance is listed for seven standard hen eggs and has automatic turning but manual humidity control. If you want humidity automation in a larger tabletop unit, Brinsea lists EX versions in its Maxi and Ovation families. These are differences in features, not proof that one approach produces more successful hatches.
Compare Brinsea’s listed capacities and automation
The following capacities are manufacturer-stated hen-egg capacities. Actual fit depends on egg size, species, and the tray or insert configuration; check compatibility before ordering. Brinsea’s incubator comparison and Ovation range page describe these model families and features.

- 【Automatic Egg Turning with Adjustable Intervals】Gentle horizontal egg turning helps improve hatch rates. Customize turning intervals for different species—choose from 1h / 2h / 3h, with a real-time countdown to the next rotation. Automatically stops turning during Lockdown (last 3 days) to ensure safe hatching.
- 【Two Egg Trays for Different Egg Sizes】The standard tray (18-slot) holds 18 chicken or up to 50 quail or other small bird eggs, while the large tray (8-slot) fits 8 duck, goose, or turkey eggs. Designed to accommodate a wide range of egg sizes for versatile incubation.
- 【Fully Adjustable Incubation Day & Cycle (2026 Upgrade)】Manually set incubation day and cycle for any species. Automatically enters Lockdown based on your settings. Eggs transferred mid-incubation can be set to the correct incubation day, enabling real-time tracking and Lockdown at the correct time.
- 【Temperature & Humidity Alerts (Alarm Optional – 2026 Upgrade)】Instantly notifies you of temperature or humidity issues. Alerts can be turned off, a feature most other incubators lack—perfect for dry incubation users without constant annoying alarms.
- 【Automatic Water Refill & Precise Humidity Control】The external water bottle refills automatically, with only 2–3 water bottle refills needed throughout incubation. No lid opening or daily refills required. Adjustable air vent and multi-level water channels provide precise and flexible humidity control.
| Model or family | Listed capacity | Turning and humidity notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mini II | 7 standard hen eggs | The Mini II Advance has automatic turning and manual humidity control. |
| Maxi 24 | 24 hen eggs | Advance and EX variants are listed; EX adds automatic humidity control. |
| Maxi 48 | 48 hen eggs | Advance and EX variants are listed; EX adds automatic humidity control. |
| Ovation 28 | 28 hen eggs | EX versions include integrated automatic humidity control. |
| Ovation 56 | 56 hen eggs | EX versions include integrated automatic humidity control. |
Brinsea’s U.S. catalog currently lists Maxi 24 EX, Maxi 48 EX, Ovation 28 EX, and Ovation 56 EX among its automatic models. Product availability, configuration, price, warranty, and voltage can vary by market and change over time, so confirm them with the manufacturer for your location.
How to choose an incubator for your eggs
- Start with species and egg size. Use the stated capacity only as a hen-egg reference unless the manufacturer confirms compatibility with your intended eggs. Look for the correct tray, carrier, or insert.
- Choose capacity for your batch. The listed Brinsea examples range from seven standard hen eggs to 56 hen eggs. Avoid choosing solely by the largest number: the relevant capacity is the one that fits your eggs and batch.
- Decide which tasks to automate. Confirm automatic turning, temperature control, and humidity control individually. If humidity management is a priority, look for an explicit automatic-humidity specification rather than relying on the word “automatic.”
- Check controls and alerts. Compare temperature displays, alarms, and any monitoring features. Treat app access as a way to view settings or receive alerts, not as a substitute for checking conditions at the incubator.
- Check practical upkeep and support. Review how water is added, how the unit is cleaned, and whether the instructions and support are available for the exact model. Brinsea’s user manuals index lists documentation and model-specific parts; verify that an accessory is explicitly compatible with both your incubator and egg type.
Does a more automated model improve hatch rates?
Automation can reduce some routine tasks, but the manufacturer feature pages cited here do not establish that a particular model has a higher hatch rate than another. They also do not provide an independent comparative success rate. Choose on capacity, egg compatibility, controls, and the level of hands-on management you want—not on an unsupported promise of better hatch outcomes.
