Best Tangs for a Reef Tank: How to Choose the Right Species

The right reef-tank tang depends on adult size, swimming room, and tankmates. Compare four species and plan for grazing, water quality, and compatibility.

There is no single best tang for every reef tank. Choose by the fish’s adult size and swimming needs, your aquarium’s capacity, and the temperaments of its current residents—not by a “reef compatible” label alone. Among the four species compared here, LiveAquaria lists the Tomini Tang as needing the least space, but its 70-gallon listing is still a substantial aquarium, not a small-tank recommendation.

Which tang is best for your reef tank?

The best choice depends on your aquarium and stocking plan. A Tomini Tang is the least space-demanding of the four species in the LiveAquaria listings below. Lavender, Powder Brown, and Convict tangs are listed at larger maximum sizes and higher minimum tank volumes. Those numbers are seller guidance, not independently tested welfare thresholds or guarantees that a fish will thrive in a particular setup.

Adult size and activity matter. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) says a larger aquarium is generally preferable and gives 300 litres as general guidance for one individual under 20 cm; larger and more active fish need more room. It recommends choosing a tank that can accommodate the fish at full size. [OATA tang and rabbitfish care sheet]

Compare four tangs commonly considered for reef tanks

The measurements and minimum tank volumes in this table are from LiveAquaria species listings accessed in 2026. They may change, so check the listing when buying. “Reef compatible” is the retailer’s label, not a guarantee that a fish will be harmless to every coral or invertebrate in every aquarium.

Species Listing: maximum size Listing: minimum tank Listing: care level Reef label and compatibility note
Bristletooth Tomini Tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis) 6 in 70 gal Moderate Listed as reef compatible; aggressive toward other tangs, peaceful with other fish. [LiveAquaria Tomini Tang listing]
Lavender Tang (Acanthurus nigrofuscus) 8 in 125 gal Easy Listed as reef compatible; aggressive toward other tangs and surgeonfish. [LiveAquaria Lavender Tang listing]
Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicus) 8 in 130 gal Not stated by LiveAquaria Listed as reef compatible; the seller advises keeping only one Powder Brown and using caution with similar tangs. [LiveAquaria Powder Brown Tang listing]
Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus) 8 in 130 gal Not stated by LiveAquaria Listed as reef compatible; the seller says other tang species may harass it. [LiveAquaria Convict Tang listing]

The “care level” labels are retailer classifications, not a comparable independent difficulty rating. LiveAquaria provides one for Tomini and Lavender but not for the other two.

Choose by aquarium size and stocking plan

If space is the main constraint

The Tomini is the least space-demanding option in this sample according to LiveAquaria’s listings, but that does not make it a small-tank fish: the retailer lists a 70-gallon minimum. It is aggressive toward other tangs, so a lower volume recommendation does not remove the need to plan for territorial behavior or swimming space.

If you have a larger system and a compatibility plan

LiveAquaria lists Lavender at 125 gallons and Powder Brown and Convict at 130 gallons, each with a maximum size of 8 inches. These figures are listing recommendations, not universal thresholds. Consider activity, available swimming room, the fish’s tankmates, and the needs of your corals and invertebrates before choosing one.

Are tangs reef safe?

All four species are labeled “reef compatible” in the sampled LiveAquaria listings. That label is useful as a starting point, but it does not promise that every individual fish will suit every reef. The listings do not establish a guarantee for all corals and invertebrates, and the aquarium still needs water conditions appropriate to its most sensitive inhabitants. OATA likewise notes that reef systems may need parameters adjusted for sensitive species.

Can you keep more than one tang?

Sometimes, but the answer depends on the aquarium, species, and existing fish; there is no reliable mix to recommend without those details. OATA warns that tangs with similar body shapes can be territorial. It recommends introducing them simultaneously and toward the end of stocking. Retailer guidance is more restrictive for some of these species: LiveAquaria advises keeping only one Powder Brown and using caution with similar tangs, while its Tomini and Lavender listings describe aggression toward other tangs.

Yellow Tang Live Saltwater Reef Aquarium Fish 1.5-2 Inch Marine Species Bright Yellow Color Active Swimmer for Reef Tank Setup Compatible with Rock Structure Marine Systems
  • YELLOW TANG MARINE SPECIES – Features vibrant yellow coloration, creating a bold and highly visible aquarium display
  • IDEAL FOR REEF AQUARIUM SETUPS – Thrives in stable marine environments with rock structures and open swimming areas
  • SIZE 1.5–2 INCHES READY FOR ACCLIMATION – Ideal size for introduction into established saltwater aquariums
  • ACTIVE SWIMMER WITH STRONG VISUAL PRESENCE – Adds constant movement, energy, and color to aquarium setups

For a Convict Tang, LiveAquaria warns that other tang species may harass it. Treat these warnings as reasons to plan carefully, not as proof that any particular combination will work. If you cannot provide ample room and a considered introduction plan, keeping a single tang avoids the added uncertainty of tang-to-tang aggression.

Prepare the aquarium and diet before bringing one home

Provide a mature, monitored environment

OATA recommends a cycled aquarium, gradual increases in fish load, weekly water checks, rockwork for cover and natural behavior, moderate flow, and a lid because tangs may jump. Its general guidance for tangs and rabbitfish is salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 24–26°C, pH 7.9–8.3, ammonia at zero, nitrite at zero, nitrate no higher than 50 mg/L, and carbonate hardness 8–12°dKH. These are group-level care-sheet ranges; check species-specific needs and do not use them to override the requirements of sensitive reef inhabitants. A marine test kit can help monitor water quality.

Make grazing foods available

Tangs graze algae in the wild. OATA recommends algae sheets or grazing tabs, and LiveAquaria specifically recommends marine seaweed and algae for Tomini Tangs, suggesting that dried seaweed can be tied to rock or offered with a veggie clip. Keep suitable grazing food part of the feeding plan rather than relying on what grows naturally in the aquarium. [LiveAquaria Tomini Tang listing]

Inspect and acclimate a new fish

Before purchase, OATA recommends checking a fish’s eyes, fins, scales, swimming, and breathing, and avoiding fish from a tank where sick fish are present. Follow an appropriate acclimation process; the care sheet discusses floating-bag and drip acclimation. It also says that quarantining a new fish for at least a week can help reduce disease-spread risk. [OATA tang and rabbitfish care sheet]
