There is no reliable evidence establishing five best cheeses for mouse traps—or that cheese beats other baits. Cheese is one possible option, but expert guidance conflicts: some extension sources list it, while an Armed Forces Pest Management Board guide says it is not an effective rodent attractant. For a practical shortlist, start with food the mouse already eats, or try a small amount of peanut butter; oats and nesting material are other options.
Why this is not a ranking of five cheeses
University of Florida IFAS lists “Cheese, peanut butter, rolled oats” as options for mice, and Oregon State University Extension also includes cheese among possible baits. But the Armed Forces Pest Management Board says, “Cheese, although common in lore, is not an effective attractant for rodents.” These sources do not establish which cheese varieties work best, or provide a controlled comparison of cheese with other baits.
So rather than label five cheeses as proven winners, here are five practical bait approaches supported by the available guidance. A mouse’s existing food preferences and whether the bait stays on the trigger matter more than choosing a particular cheese variety.
Five mouse-trap bait options to try
| Option | What the guidance says | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Food the mouse already eats | UC IPM says “the best bait is often the food that house mice are already eating”; UC ANR also recommends an attractant likely to be available locally or already in the rodent’s diet. | When you can identify the food, try a small amount secured to the trigger. |
| Peanut butter | UC IPM describes it as popular, easy to use, and attractive to house mice. CDC recommends a small amount of chunky peanut butter or mutton fat on a snap trap’s bait pan. | Its sticky texture can help keep a small dab in place. Consider allergies and whether children or pets could access the trap. |
| Oats or an oats mixture | Nevada Extension and Wisconsin Extension list oats or peanut butter mixed with oats among mouse bait options. | Use a small amount and secure it so the mouse must interact with the trigger. |
| Cheese | Florida IFAS and Oregon State Extension include cheese as an option; the Armed Forces Pest Management Board disputes its effectiveness as an attractant. | It is reasonable to try if the mouse already eats it, but no specific cheese type is established as best. |
| Cotton or dental floss | UC IPM and UC ANR say mice may collect small pieces of cotton or dental floss for nesting material. | This is a non-food lure to consider when an edible bait is not attracting interest. |
How to bait and place a snap trap
- Choose a small amount. UC IPM advises using a small amount of bait. UC ANR recommends about a pea-sized amount and placing it on the trigger or in its recess.
- Make sure the bait engages the trap. Place it where the mouse has to touch the trigger to reach it. UC IPM reports higher catch rates with wide-trigger mouse traps.
- Set the trap along a sheltered route. Nevada Extension recommends placing mouse traps along walls and other covered routes. Its 2002 guidance suggests spacing traps 6 to 10 feet apart; that is source-specific advice, not a guarantee for every home.
- Use fresh bait. Wisconsin Extension says fresh bait is preferable to spoiled or rotten food. It also says prebaiting is usually unnecessary for mice, unlike rats, for which it says prebaiting is necessary.
Trap location matters alongside bait. Nevada Extension says house mice tend to stay within 10 to 30 feet of their nest, so placing traps on likely travel routes may be more useful than relying on an especially tempting food.

What effectiveness figures do—and do not—show
University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service’s MP546 states that properly set wooden snap traps are 75% to 88% effective in killing rodents. That figure concerns snap-trap effectiveness, not a comparison of bait types or cheeses. No named statistic in the cited guidance compares cheese varieties or cheese directly with peanut butter.

CDC recommends traditional snap traps for household rodent reduction. Put traps where children and pets cannot reach them, and take peanut allergies into account before using peanut butter. If you cannot resolve an infestation safely or effectively, consider contacting a qualified pest-control professional.
