Yes—pygmy three-toed sloths have been photographed swimming in seawater near their home island, Isla Escudo de Veraguas, off Panama’s Caribbean coast. The images document sea swimming, not routine journeys across open ocean: how far these sloths swim, or whether they cross between the island and mainland, has not been established.
Can pygmy sloths really swim in the sea?
Yes. A 2018 bioGraphic photo essay documents pygmy three-toed sloths swimming in seawater near Isla Escudo. The animals paddle through the water, an arresting sight for a species more often pictured among trees.
The photographs establish that the sloths swim in the sea; they do not establish how far an individual travels, why it swims, or whether open-ocean crossings are routine. Suggestions that swimming helps them move between mangrove patches are plausible interpretations, not a demonstrated explanation. Claims that pygmy sloths regularly cross from the island to the mainland or other islands go beyond the documented evidence.
Where do pygmy three-toed sloths live?
The pygmy three-toed sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus) is known only from Isla Escudo de Veraguas, a small island off Panama’s Caribbean coast. Its entire known geographic range is confined to that island, making the condition of its habitat especially important.

Red mangroves are a central habitat, but the species is not known to live exclusively in them. A field survey recorded animals in trees just beyond mangrove edges, and later reporting and tracking research describe use of forest interior as well as mangroves. The more accurate description is that pygmy sloths are strongly associated with red mangroves, but not confined to them.
What do we know about the number of pygmy sloths?
A survey by Kaviar and colleagues, published in PLOS ONE in 2012, recorded 79 sloths during fieldwork in May 2011. Researchers visually searched all ten mangrove thickets on the island and found 70 animals in mangroves and nine in nearby non-mangrove trees.

The researchers treated 79 as a minimum estimate, not a complete count: they also saw animals outside the surveyed areas. It is a dated survey result, not a current population estimate. No newer reliable census figure is established here, so the number of pygmy sloths alive today is unknown.
Why is the species vulnerable?
The island-only range leaves the species with no known population elsewhere to offset damage to its habitat. The 2012 survey measured Isla Escudo’s mangrove habitat at 1.67 hectares, or 0.024% of the island’s area. At the time, the researchers said they could not establish how connected sloth groups were because movement data were lacking; they warned that low numbers, habitat fragmentation, and habitat loss could increase risks such as inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity.

Panama’s environment ministry has identified habitat destruction as a leading threat and uncontrolled tourism as another concern. In a 2024 report, Panama’s science agency also described a genetics project and listed human and domestic-animal contact, illegal trade, and unsustainable mangrove exploitation among the species’ vulnerabilities.
MiAmbiente’s October 2025 report described waste, deforestation, structures in mangrove areas, domestic animals, and damaging or illegal activities in the protected landscape. It stated that only previously authorized scientific, corrective, cleanup, restoration, monitoring, or control activities would be allowed. Because access rules can change, this report should not be treated as confirmation of the rules currently in force.

Separately, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in March 2024 that it was proposing to list the pygmy three-toed sloth as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, with a special rule. That announcement establishes a proposal, not a final listing outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can visitors go to Isla Escudo de Veraguas?
The conservation concerns and MiAmbiente’s October 2025 restrictions make casual travel advice inappropriate. The ministry’s report said activities in the protected landscape required prior authorization. Anyone considering a visit should confirm current access rules directly with Panama’s authorities before making plans; do not assume tourism or independent access is permitted.
