Mosha was seven months old when she stepped on a landmine in Myanmar and lost her front right foot, according to the Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation (FAE). The foundation took her into its care, and in 2008 she tried a prosthetic leg—an individually made device that later had to be replaced as her body grew.

How Mosha lost her foot

FAE’s account says Mosha was injured in Myanmar at seven months old after stepping on a landmine. She lost her front right foot, and her owner transferred her care to the foundation. The account places the injury across the Myanmar border but does not establish a more precise location or further details about the mine. FAE’s 2022 history of Mosha’s prostheses is the source for these details.

Mosha’s first prosthetic leg

FAE says Mosha first tried a prosthetic leg in 2008 and describes her as the first elephant to wear one. In the foundation’s account, she bore weight on the device, accepted it, and could walk while wearing it. It was removed when she became sleepy and lay down to rest.

This was custom specialist work for Mosha, not a standard retail prosthesis. FAE’s historical archive also recounts adjustments to Mosha’s device in 2009, with a specialist team led by Associate Professor Dr. Therdchai Jivacate working alongside staff at the elephant hospital. The foundation’s archive of the 2009 account includes a separate history of Motala, another elephant; Motala’s injury and treatment should not be confused with Mosha’s.

Why Mosha needed another prosthesis

In its account published on 28 October 2022, FAE said Mosha had grown and her earlier prosthesis had become too tight for comfortable walking. It also described a two-year interruption in production associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. On 21 March 2022, Associate Professor Dr. Therdchai Jivacate and his team came to the foundation’s hospital to make new prosthetic legs for Mosha and Motala.

The reported need to remake Mosha’s device shows why a prosthesis fitted to a growing animal may need to change. FAE’s account does not specify the device’s materials, engineering details, expected lifespan, or clinical outcome, so those details cannot be inferred from it.

What is known about Mosha today?

The cited FAE account documents the replacement work in 2022; it does not establish Mosha’s health or prosthesis status today. Without a newer primary update, it is not possible to say whether she currently wears a prosthetic leg or how she is doing.

Elephant Parade’s “We Love Mosha – USA” page says the organization continues to support Friends of the Asian Elephant in Thailand. It is a further-reading resource, not evidence of Mosha’s present medical condition.
