People aren’t literally risking their lives for Moo Deng. The headline is playful shorthand for the internet’s intense affection for a very spirited baby pygmy hippo—and for the crowds that affection brought to her zoo. Her fame is also a reminder that a viral animal is a living creature whose comfort must come before a photo or a view count.
Who is Moo Deng?
Moo Deng is a female pygmy hippopotamus born on July 10, 2024, at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Thailand. Her parents are Tony and Jona, according to Thailand’s government information page.
Her keeper, Atthapon Nundee, shared photos and videos of her online. Her expressive face and lively behavior caught on, and one yawning video drew 5.8 million views, ABC News Australia reported in September 2024. Nundee said the response “exceeded all expectations,” adding that he had wanted people to know her and enjoy watching her, but “never imagined it would turn into this.”
What does “Moo Deng” mean?
Fans chose Moo Deng’s name in an online vote with more than 20,000 participants, according to Thailand.go.th. The name refers to a Thai meatball; “bouncy pork” is a common approximate English rendering. It is a playful food name, not a description of her species.

What happened when Moo Deng went viral?
The attention drew more people to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. ABC reported in September 2024 that visitor numbers had almost doubled since Moo Deng’s birth. But the sudden crowds also raised concerns about how visitors behaved around her. ABC reported that some people threw shellfish at her or splashed water to wake her.
In response, the zoo introduced controls that ABC described at the time: viewing in groups of 50 and five-minute viewing slots. Zoo manager Narongwit Chodchoy said, “It’s not only cruel but also dangerous,” and said the animals needed a safe, comfortable environment. The report also said the zoo installed CCTV and threatened legal action over mistreatment. Those are measures reported in September 2024, not confirmation of the zoo’s current visitor rules.

How did the crowds change?
The figures reflect different moments, not one steady attendance level. At Moo Deng’s first-birthday event on July 10, 2025, zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy told The Associated Press that 12,000 people had visited by Thursday afternoon. He also said that, over the preceding months, attendance had eased from peak levels to about 2,000 visitors on weekdays and 5,000 on weekends—around half of the peak.
The arc shows both the reach and the limits of viral attention: a burst of online fame can bring large crowds, but that effect changes over time. If you plan a visit, check Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s current official information for opening hours, access rules and ticket details; the hours and annual-pass offer on Thailand.go.th were published in an October 2024 update and are historical, not reliable current trip-planning details.

Can Moo Deng’s fame help pygmy hippos?
Pygmy hippos are native to West Africa and face threats from poaching and habitat loss. Reports by Thailand’s Public Relations Department in 2024 and The Associated Press in 2025 put the wild population at roughly 2,000 to 3,000. That is a reported estimate, not a live count or precise census.
Chodchoy told AP that Moo Deng represents wild animals and can turn public attention toward conservation. Her fame has plainly attracted attention, but the cited reporting does not establish that it has caused a measurable improvement for pygmy hippos in the wild. Public interest and conservation impact are not the same thing.

- This plush is approx. 5" x 10.5" x 5" in size

- Eco-friendly fabric sourced from 100% recycled plastic bottles.
- Intricately embroidered eyes so there's no unnecessary plastic.

Khao Kheow’s breeding program is part of the zoo’s conservation context, as described by Thailand’s Public Relations Department. A zoo breeding program, however, should not be taken as proof that wild populations have recovered. The harder test is whether awareness leads to sustained support for habitat protection and other conservation work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does responsible enthusiasm look like?
- Follow the zoo’s current directions and give Moo Deng space rather than trying to get her attention.
- Never throw food, splash water or otherwise disturb an animal for a reaction or video.
- Enjoy keeper-posted photos and footage without treating access to a famous animal as a guarantee of a close encounter.
- If buying a souvenir, verify its seller and whether it is officially licensed. AP documented a Moo Deng soft toy at her 2025 birthday event, and The Nation reported in 2024 that the zoo was pursuing branded merchandise. Those reports do not establish that any particular online listing is official or currently available.
For more on the name and her early rise to fame, see Thailand’s Public Relations Department’s account. ABC’s September 2024 report details the early crowds and care concerns, while AP’s July 2025 birthday coverage documents later attendance figures and the zoo director’s conservation message.
