A 2019 Russian farm trial reported that cows wearing adapted VR glasses seemed less anxious, but it did not show that the headsets increased milk production. A later Turkish farmer described a yield increase in two cows, but that short observation was anecdotal, not a controlled study.
What happened in the Russian cow-VR trial?
In 2019, developers worked with veterinarians and production consultants to adapt human VR glasses to cattle head structure. They paired the prototype with a simulated summer field at RusMoloko, a dairy farm in the Ramensky urban district of Moscow Region. The Moscow Region Ministry of Agriculture and Food account said the simulation took cattle’s reported stronger perception of red shades and weaker perception of blue and green into account. It was a prototype, not a named retail product.
The ministry reported: “During the first test, experts recorded a decrease in anxiety and an increase in the overall emotional mood of the herd.” It did not state the number of cows, test duration, or a numerical measure of that change, so the account supports only a preliminary report of observed behavior and mood.
Did the Russian trial show more milk?
No. The ministry explicitly said: “The impact of VR glasses on the milk production of cows will be shown by a further comprehensive study.” The initial account therefore does not establish a milk-yield increase. Euronews’ contemporaneous report also said milk-production effects remained to be studied. The Moscow Times coverage described production as a later phase of evaluation.

What about the Turkish farmer’s reported milk increase?
In 2022, The National reported that Turkish cattle breeder İzzet Koçak tried Russian-made VR glasses on two cows. Koçak said that over about 10 days their daily yield rose from 22 to 27 litres, and he also claimed a change in milk quality.
That figure is Koçak’s reported observation, not a study result. The report does not describe a control group or enough trial detail to determine whether VR caused the change. It should not be generalized to other cows or farms.

Why simulate a green pasture?
The idea was to provide visual stimulation resembling a summer field, adapted to reported features of cattle vision. That does not mean the cows were grazing outdoors or that a visual simulation replaces access to appropriate feed, space, movement, or other husbandry needs. The available accounts do not establish how long cows wore the glasses, how the simulation was assessed beyond the preliminary observations, or whether the effect persisted.
How does VR compare with other cow-welfare ideas?
The ministry’s account also mentioned automatic rotating brushes, systems intended to permit more free movement, and equipment playing classical music. It offered these as examples of welfare interventions, not as a head-to-head comparison. The available reporting does not show which approach works best.

To evaluate any claim about a farm intervention, ask:
- Was it tested in a controlled study or described as an individual observation?
- What outcome was measured: behavior, a welfare indicator, milk yield, or milk quality?
- How many animals were involved, and for how long?
- Does the intervention address living conditions and husbandry, or provide visual or audio stimulation alone?
The ministry account refers generally to analyses by Wageningen University and Scotland’s Rural College, but does not identify papers, authors, dates, methods, or effect sizes. Those references cannot establish a specific result without bibliographic details.

Can farmers buy the cow VR headset?
The Russian coverage describes a cattle-adapted prototype, not a commercially available product or a consumer headset shown to be suitable for cows. The reports do not provide a product name, purchasing information, or evidence that ordinary VR glasses can be safely or effectively used as a substitute.
