No wasps were found in the nest workers discovered at South Carolina’s Savannah River Site on July 3, 2025. Workers sprayed and removed it as radiological waste. The reported contamination measurement does not, by itself, show that a tank leaked, establish anyone’s radiation dose, or prove a health effect.
What happened at the Savannah River Site?
Employees conducting routine radiological checks found a wasp nest on a post near tanks holding liquid radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site (SRS), a federal complex near Aiken, South Carolina. According to the Associated Press account, workers sprayed the nest, removed it, and disposed of it as radiological waste; no wasps were found in it. Associated Press
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report, dated July 22, 2025, was described in subsequent news coverage as finding contamination in the nest at more than ten times the total values permitted under applicable federal regulations. DOE attributed it to “onsite legacy radioactive contamination” and said it was “not related to a loss of contamination control,” as reported by The Guardian. The Guardian
The headline’s “missing” wasps are not evidence that radioactive insects escaped. The account says workers found no wasps in the nest; it does not establish why the nest was empty.

What the contamination reading does—and does not—show
The reported comparison is between contamination measured in the nest and a regulatory contamination value. It is not a measurement of a person’s dose, and it should not be described as “ten times the safe dose.” The accessible reporting does not identify the radionuclide or give enough measurement detail to calculate an individual dose or infer a health effect. - It establishes: news reports say the nest exceeded the applicable contamination values by more than tenfold.
- It does not establish: how much radiation any wasp received, whether a person was exposed, or what dose anyone might have received.
- It does not prove: a tank leak. A contaminated nest near waste tanks is not, on its own, evidence that radioactive waste escaped from a tank.
DOE and the site contractor said the surrounding area was not contaminated and reported no impacts to workers, the public, or the environment. DOE’s explanation and the watchdog’s questions
DOE’s reported explanation was legacy radioactive contamination already present onsite, rather than a loss of contamination control. The Associated Press reported that DOE’s account said there was no tank leak. Those are agency conclusions; the reported nest reading alone cannot confirm or rule out the specific route by which the nest became contaminated. Associated Press The Guardian
Tom Clements, executive director of Savannah River Site Watch, questioned how the wasps were exposed and whether that exposure pathway still existed. He also criticized the lack of detail about the source. His questions call for an explanation; they are not evidence that a tank leaked. That distinction matters: the reported contamination finding raises a question about the nest’s pathway, while the claim of no tank leak is DOE’s stated position. The accessible accounts do not provide a later investigation result that resolves the pathway question.
Were there more contaminated nests?
A Washington Post report published August 2, 2025, said at least three additional contaminated nests had been found within the 310-square-mile site. The report also described concern among local residents and a site watchdog about whether the exposure pathway remained active. What remains unknown
The available reporting does not establish which radionuclide was detected, the dose received by any individual wasp, the final number of contaminated nests, or whether a later inquiry identified a definitive source. Without those details, the nest result cannot be translated into a dose estimate or a conclusion about individual health risk.
