A fossil egg from Patagonia, Argentina, preserves an almost intact skull of a titanosaurian embryo dating to about 80 million years ago. In a 2020 study, researchers described an unusual face and features they interpret as evidence that aspects of stereoscopic vision and facial sensory anatomy were developing before the dinosaur hatched.
What was found in Argentina?
The specimen is an embryonic skull associated with a titanosaurian egg from Auca Mahuevo, a fossil egg locality in Patagonia. Titanosaurs were long-necked sauropod dinosaurs. The study describes the skull as almost intact, not wholly intact, and does not identify the embryo to a particular genus or species.
The relevant embryos were discovered about 25 years before the paper appeared in 2020. That is an approximate interval given by the authors, not a specific excavation date for this skull. The fossils are approximately 80 million years old.
What makes the embryo’s skull unusual?
The authors report facial anatomy they characterize as unusual for a sauropod, including a monocerotic face. They also describe a neurovascular sensory system in the premaxilla—the bone at the front of the upper jaw—and a partly calcified braincase.

The study further reports features that indicate early development of stereoscopic vision, or the use of overlapping visual fields from both eyes to perceive depth. These findings concern an embryo; they do not show that the hatchling already had the full visual abilities or adult skull shape of a mature animal.
What does the skull reveal about development?
The researchers observed that the cranial bones were ossified to a degree comparable to those in previously described specimens, even though the embryo differed from them in facial anatomy and size. They interpret this combination as evidence that specialized craniofacial form appeared before postnatal transformation of the skull in adult related titanosaurs.

The paper also discusses heterochrony: differences in the timing or pace of development. In this case, the authors compare cranial ossification in sauropod embryos with that in embryos of non-sauropod sauropodomorphs. This is an evolutionary interpretation of developmental patterns, not a directly observed sequence of changes through an individual dinosaur’s life.

- It establishes: an almost intact titanosaurian embryonic skull from Auca Mahuevo, with reported facial, sensory, and braincase features.
- It suggests: some specialized aspects of facial anatomy and vision-related development were present before hatching, and that cranial form changed after birth in related titanosaurs.
- It does not establish: the embryo’s exact species, a precise excavation date, or the complete appearance and behavior of the adult animal.
