There is no reliable universal number for how many animals an individual pet cat kills each year. Cats differ widely, and studies count different things: prey brought home, captures seen on camera, or modeled totals for whole populations. The large U.S. estimates often cited—1.4–3.7 billion birds and 6.9–20.7 billion mammals annually—refer to all free-ranging domestic cats, with un-owned cats responsible for most of the estimated mortality, not to each household pet.

What does “my cat kills” mean?

A cat may catch and eat prey outdoors without its owner seeing it, leave a carcass where it fell, or bring prey home. Those outcomes are not interchangeable. A prey-return study counts what owners find; a camera study records behavior during a limited observation window; a national estimate extrapolates across a much larger cat population. Each can answer a different question, but none gives a complete count for every individual cat.

The 2025 global systematic review and meta-analysis compared 88 studies and concluded that methods capture different aspects of cat diet and predation. Owner reports are more likely to include prey that cats return, while cameras sample only the recorded period and may show a different mix of prey. The review of methods is a reason to keep each result in its own context rather than combining unlike measurements.

How many birds and mammals do cats kill in the United States?

A 2013 systematic review estimated that free-ranging domestic cats in the United States kill 1.4–3.7 billion birds and 6.9–20.7 billion mammals annually. The authors concluded that “Un-owned cats, as opposed to owned pets, cause the majority of this mortality.” These are broad, modeled national totals for free-ranging cats—not a per-cat annual rate and not a count of prey killed by pet cats alone. The study by Scott R. Loss, Tom Will, and Peter P. Marra explains the distinction.

What do studies of owned cats show?

Prey returned by cats in Reading, UK

A 2012 study in Reading estimated an average of 18.3 prey returned per cat per year. That is a count of returned prey, not all prey caught or killed. Returns varied by place and time, and the average conceals substantial differences: 20% of cats returned at least four dead prey in a year. Thomas, Fellowes, and Baker’s study describes the variation and the limits of using returns as a measure of predation.

Prey returns across the UK

A 2025 UK survey recorded prey returned by 553 cats between 2018 and 2021. The authors modeled 37.25–140.4 million prey returned annually by the UK pet-cat population. Most cats in the survey returned zero to one prey per month, while a small minority returned more than 15 in a month. This is a modeled national estimate of prey returns, not a direct count of all kills. The 2025 study reports the survey and its population estimate.

Short camera observations in Auckland

In a small, convenience-sampled Auckland study, cameras recorded predation behavior in 23 of 37 cats (62.2%) observed for one to three consecutive days. The cats made 40 successful prey captures, including 18 captures of native fauna. Those results describe that sample and brief observation period; they should not be treated as a typical annual count for a pet cat. Bruce and colleagues’ camera study provides the local context.

Can you use the 2015 infographic as your cat’s annual estimate?

The accessible text for Jolene Creighton’s April 12, 2015 infographic article says University of Georgia and National Geographic researchers used small cameras on pet cats that lived both indoors and outdoors, then reviewed footage of hunting and killing. The accessible page text does not reproduce the infographic’s figures or source notes, so it does not establish a per-cat number that can responsibly be repeated here. The infographic article should not be treated as a verified annual estimate for an individual cat.

What can reduce prey brought home?

A controlled, replicated trial tested several interventions and counted animals captured and brought home. Its findings are study-specific outcomes, not guarantees that a cat will stop hunting or that the same effect will occur in every household.

Intervention tested Result in the trial Important qualification
High-meat-protein, grain-free food 36% fewer animals captured and brought home The trial’s food was provided to participants with support from Lily’s Kitchen; the result does not establish a general dietary recommendation.
Five to ten minutes of daily object play 25% fewer animals captured and brought home than controls and the pre-treatment period The intervention was daily object play, not a test of a particular toy or brand.
Birdsbesafe collar cover 42% fewer birds captured and brought home No discernible effect on mammals was found; it did not prevent all captures.
Cat bells No discernible effect This trial did not find a reduction in prey returns.
Puzzle feeders 33% more prey returned This was an increase in the trial, not a recommended measure for reducing predation.

The authors disclosed relevant support for the food intervention and a purchase discount for Birdsbesafe. The trial’s outcomes concern the measures it tested and the animals brought home; they do not establish a universal result for all cats or all wildlife. The 2021 trial reports the interventions and outcomes.

How to interpret a number for your own cat

  • Check the geography: U.S., UK, and Auckland results describe different cat populations and wildlife.
  • Check which cats were counted: owned pets with outdoor access are not equivalent to all free-ranging cats, especially when many are un-owned.
  • Check the measure: a returned animal, a camera-recorded capture, and an extrapolated mortality estimate are different outcomes.
  • Check the time window: a few days of camera footage cannot establish a typical annual total.
  • Expect uneven activity: averages can be shaped by a small share of cats that return substantially more prey than most.
