CONICET describes it as about five metres long and roughly 70 million years old. Its size and distinctive skull set it apart from the familiar Velociraptor, but the fossils do not show that it was a better hunter.
What was Austroraptor?
Austroraptor cabazai was a member of the dromaeosaurid group of meat-eating dinosaurs. CONICET reports that it was discovered in 2002 at Bajo de Santa Rosa in Río Negro, Patagonia, and lived about 70 million years ago. Its 2012 account estimates its length at approximately five metres. CONICET’s account of Austroraptor describes the discovery and its estimated age and size.
The word “raptor” is often used informally for different dromaeosaurids; it does not mean Austroraptor and Velociraptor were the same species. The phrase “resurfaces after 70 million years” is dramatic shorthand for fossil discovery and scientific study, not a recent return of a living dinosaur.
How did Austroraptor compare with Velociraptor?
The clearest comparison is scale, but different kinds of measurements must not be confused. CONICET gives an approximate whole-body length for Austroraptor; the primary description compares specific bones and anatomical features.

- Slender Raptor Design: Narrow jaws, a lean body, feather coverage, and a small head crest give Austroraptor a distinctive prehistoric look for dinosaur adventures, classroom activities, and display.
- Dimensions: Measures 9 inches long x 3 inches tall. Its elongated build fits naturally into dinosaur play, school projects, prehistoric habitat scenes, dioramas, tabletop displays, and collections.
- Colorful Feather Detail: Green, blue, and light brown coloring combines with black crest details and cream-colored stripes across the feathered sculpt for a distinctive appearance in play, projects, and display.
- Play Learn Display: Add Austroraptor to Cretaceous adventures, dinosaur lessons, classroom activities, school projects, prehistoric dioramas, tabletop scenes, gifts, or broader dinosaur collections.
- PVC Dinosaur Figure: Made from PVC plastic for ages 3+. This standalone raptor figure works for hands-on imaginative play while also fitting classroom work, prehistoric projects, gifting, and display.
| Feature | Austroraptor cabazai | Velociraptor mongoliensis |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate total length | About 5 metres, according to CONICET’s 2012 account. | Not stated in the cited comparison sources. |
| Maxilla length | 39 cm, in the comparative table in Novas et al. (2009). | 10.9 cm, in the same table. |
| Teeth listed in the comparison table | 24, as listed by Novas et al. (2009). | 11, as listed by Novas et al. (2009). |
The maxilla is an upper-jaw bone, so the 39 cm and 10.9 cm figures compare parts of the skull, not the dinosaurs’ full body lengths. The tooth counts are entries in the paper’s anatomical comparison, not evidence of bite force or hunting success. The measurements come from the original scientific description, Novas et al., “A bizarre Cretaceous theropod dinosaur from Patagonia and the evolution of Gondwanan dromaeosaurids” (2009).
What was distinctive about Austroraptor’s anatomy?
CONICET describes Austroraptor as having a long, low skull, numerous conical teeth and short arms. Those traits give a more useful picture of what made it unusual than the sensational “amateur” comparison: it was a large-bodied relative with a notably different combination of proportions and teeth.

Anatomical differences are not a scoreboard for predatory ability. The comparative measurements describe fossils; they do not establish which dinosaur was faster, more intelligent, more dangerous or more capable at hunting.

No. The cited sources support a substantial size contrast and differences in skull and forelimb anatomy. They do not provide direct evidence that Austroraptor outperformed Velociraptor as a hunter. Body size, preserved bone dimensions and inferred behavior are separate questions, and these measurements cannot settle the behavioral comparison.
