No—cats do not need their own TV. Some enjoy watching bird or wildlife videos, making a screen one optional form of enrichment, but it is not a substitute for play or for the other things cats need at home. Let your cat decide whether to watch, and turn it off if viewing seems frustrating.
Is cat TV healthy?
Watching a video can be an acceptable activity for a cat that chooses to watch. The ASPCA includes cat-friendly videos among its suggested enrichment ideas, including searching for “bird TV for cats” and displaying suitable videos on a screen. That makes videos an option to try—not a proven treatment, a welfare requirement, or a replacement for other care.
There is no established optimal viewing time or quantified health benefit in the sources cited here. There is also no basis here for estimating how many cats enjoy cat TV. Individual responses matter more than assuming every cat will be interested.
Why a screen should be only one part of enrichment
Indoor cats need opportunities to engage with their environment beyond watching images. The American Association of Feline Practitioners’ 2024 Indoor/Outdoor Lifestyle Position Statement identifies essential resources for indoor-only cats, including food and water, safe resting places, play, simulated hunting and foraging, vertical territory, and appropriate, clean toileting areas. It notes that unmet environmental needs may be associated with anxiety, stress-related illness, or behavioral concerns.
#1 Best Overall
- Backyard birds, squirrels, rabbits, and garden wildlife
- Natural outdoor settings and calming ambience
- Designed to encourage focus, curiosity, and visual engagement
- No narration or distracting graphics
Television can show movement, but the cat cannot catch a bird on the screen. A 2009 review by Sarah L. H. Ellis discusses video as visual stimulation while cautioning that inaccessible stimuli may potentially frustrate some animals. That is a reason to observe your cat—not evidence that screens harm cats in general.
How to try bird videos with your cat
- Offer a video as an option. Choose a cat-friendly bird or wildlife video and give your cat the choice to approach or ignore it.
- Watch your cat’s response. If your cat loses interest or walks away, let the video end for them; do not try to keep them watching.
- Stop if viewing seems frustrating. If the cat appears bothered by being unable to interact with what is on screen, turn it off and offer an activity they can engage with instead. The cited guidance does not provide a validated list of cat-TV-specific stress signs.
- Keep interactive play in the routine. A video should not take the place of play with you or opportunities for simulated hunting and foraging.
What to provide instead of—or alongside—the screen
Think of cat TV as an optional extra, not the answer to a cat’s environmental needs. Make room for play, safe places to rest, vertical space, and opportunities to engage in hunting-like play and foraging. Keep food, water, and clean toileting areas available as well. A comfortable perch or cat tree may help provide vertical space, but no particular product is necessary for a cat to watch a video.
