Fake owls and other predator decoys can briefly reduce activity, mainly among birds, but they rarely solve a wildlife problem for long. Use them as a temporary part of a broader plan—not as a permanent shield for a feeder, garden, chicken run, or pet area.
Bird responses vary, and birds often habituate to stationary models. Mammals such as squirrels, rabbits, deer, and raccoons may also be startled briefly, but physical barriers and removing attractants are generally more dependable.
Do fake owls work on birds?
Sometimes. A fake owl may trigger predator recognition or an initial response to an unfamiliar object. In a 2012 field study in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, songbirds visited a feeder less often when a plastic owl was present; a similar-sized cardboard box did not produce the same effect. The study measured feeding behavior in one setting and did not establish how long the effect lasted or whether it applies to all species. Linfield University study
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) describes plastic owls and hawks as “often used unsuccessfully” to stop birds from roosting or nesting. Cornell’s bird-management guidance identifies habituation—the process of learning that a harmless object is not dangerous—as a central problem. USDA APHIS; Cornell IPM

Why do fake owls stop working?
A bird that sees an owl but is never chased, attacked, or otherwise harmed may eventually test the risk. Once it learns that the statue stays in one place and does nothing, the decoy becomes part of the scenery. USDA reports that birds can learn that effigies left in one location for a prolonged period do not represent a threat. USDA APHIS
This is especially likely when:
- The owl stays in exactly the same position for days or weeks.
- The model is poorly made, too small, hidden by plants, or visibly tipped over.
- The animal has already encountered similar plastic predators.
- Food, nesting space, water, or shelter is nearby.
- The target species is highly motivated to stay.
- The decoy is introduced after birds have established a nest or feeding routine.
Changing the decoy’s position and combining it with other deterrents can delay habituation, but cannot guarantee lasting results. Cornell says movement and relocation can delay, but not eliminate, habituation. Cornell IPM
Do moving owl decoys work better?
Movement generally gives a decoy a better chance than a completely static model. A rotating head, wind-driven wings, or moving parts can make it harder to ignore. A 2025 study of captive large-billed crows found that a sensor-activated moving owl reduced feeding activity more strongly than an immobile owl, a continuously moving owl, a cardboard box, or no visual stimulus in several measures. These captive-crow results support movement as a tactic but do not prove a consumer device will provide permanent outdoor control. 2025 study
For a short-term problem, move an owl effigy once or twice a day and remove it when it is not needed. New Hampshire Extension warns against putting visual deterrents out too early, because birds can become accustomed to them before protection is needed. UNH Cooperative Extension

How to use a decoy more effectively
- Identify the animal first. An owl model aimed at songbirds is not the same tool as a fence for rabbits or a baffle for squirrels.
- Place it where it can be seen. A model hidden behind foliage or mounted in an unsuitable location may have little effect.
- Use it when the problem is beginning. Deploying a decoy shortly before fruit ripens, birds arrive, or a vulnerable garden period begins is more useful than leaving it outside all year.
- Change its location regularly. New Hampshire Extension recommends moving an owl effigy once or twice daily.
- Choose movement when practical. Wind-driven or sensor-activated motion may be more noticeable than a rigid statue.
- Rotate deterrents. Combine a decoy with netting, reflective material, temporary hazing, or access changes instead of repeating one visual signal indefinitely. Oregon State University Extension
- Remove it after the threat passes. A constantly present decoy loses novelty and is less useful when needed.
Which decoys are most useful?
| Decoy | Possible use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic owl or hawk | May briefly reduce bird activity near a feeder, crop, or roost | Birds often habituate, especially when the model does not move |
| Scarecrow | Temporary relief in a garden or crop area | A static figure quickly becomes familiar |
| Hawk kite or predator balloon | Moving aerial-predator impression over an open area | Weather, space, species, and habitat affect results |
| Dead-bird or species-specific effigy | May signal danger to birds of the same species | Results depend on species and situation |
| Coyote model or predator silhouette | May initially discourage geese or other birds | Stationary models generally lose their effect |
Hawk kites have shown some promise in field research. A two-year study in Ireland found fewer wood pigeons crossing areas while hawk kites were deployed than during control periods. The researchers called the results preliminary and noted that weather, season, location, and surrounding land use could affect performance. Human–Wildlife Interactions study

Do fake owls work against squirrels, rabbits, deer, or raccoons?
They may startle a mammal briefly, but decoys are not dependable primary controls for most mammals.
Squirrels
A fake owl may make a squirrel hesitate, particularly when first installed, but squirrels commonly learn that a stationary model is safe. For a bird feeder, place it out of reach of jumping points and use a suitable squirrel baffle. The National Pesticide Information Center and New Hampshire Extension recommend inaccessible feeder placement and baffles; UNH recommends keeping feeders at least 10 feet from jumping points when the arrangement permits. NPIC; UNH Extension
Rabbits
Owl or snake replicas may provide limited, nearby relief, but rabbits become accustomed to them. Fencing or other exclusion is more dependable. Protect vulnerable plants with a barrier rabbits cannot squeeze beneath or through. Iowa State University Extension

Deer may initially notice a scarecrow or predator shape, but visual devices and folk remedies often fail quickly. A suitable fence, motion-activated sprinkler, or properly used repellent is usually a better choice. Fence design and local deer pressure matter more than an owl statue. University of Minnesota Extension
Raccoons
Raccoons are strongly motivated by food and shelter. A fake owl is unlikely to overcome accessible rubbish, outdoor pet food, compost, or a nesting site. Secure food and rubbish, close access points where appropriate, and use wildlife-proof barriers instead.

Can a fake owl protect a dog, cat, or other pet?
Do not treat a decoy as a reliable way to protect a pet. A plastic owl has not been shown to keep foxes, coyotes, raccoons, or other potentially dangerous wildlife away from a yard. It may also attract curiosity from pets, and some birds may mob or investigate a predator model.
For pet safety, use direct supervision, secure fencing, covered runs, and removal of attractants. Do not leave pet food outdoors or assume a decoy makes an unattended yard or enclosure safe.

For a persistent problem, integrated control is usually more dependable than a decoy alone:
- Identify the species causing the problem.
- Remove or reduce the attraction. Check for seed, fruit, rubbish, standing water, nesting material, or shelter.
- Block access. Use bird netting, fencing, wire, feeder baffles, covered runs, or other species-appropriate barriers.
- Add a temporary deterrent if needed. A moving decoy, motion sprinkler, or intermittent hazing method can add pressure during a high-risk period.
- Change the plan if animals adapt. Reassess the food source and improve exclusion rather than simply buying a larger statue.
Cornell lists bird-exclusion options such as netting, spikes, post-and-wire systems, electrified systems, and parallel-wire grids; the right choice depends on the species and site. Never block access to an occupied nest without checking applicable wildlife rules. Cornell IPM

Ultrasonic devices are not a stronger version of a fake owl for bird control. USDA guidance says birds cannot hear ultrasonic frequencies and ultrasonic devices will not scare them. UF/IFAS also does not recommend ultrasonic noise makers for most outdoor wildlife problems. USDA APHIS; UF/IFAS

FAQ
How long do fake owls keep birds away?
There is no dependable fixed period. Some birds react immediately, while others ignore the model. Habituation is more likely when an owl remains motionless in one location. Moving and removing it when it is not needed may prolong a short-term effect.
Should I move a fake owl around the yard?
Yes, if you are using one. New Hampshire Extension recommends moving an owl effigy once or twice a day. Relocation can help prevent birds from learning that the model is harmless, but does not make the deterrent permanent.
Will a fake owl keep squirrels away from my bird feeder?
It may make squirrels hesitate briefly, but they commonly become accustomed to it. Place the feeder away from jumping points and use a suitable squirrel baffle instead.
Can I use a fake owl to protect my cat or dog from wildlife?
No. A decoy is not reliable protection against foxes, coyotes, raccoons, or other wildlife. Supervision, secure fencing or enclosures, and removing outdoor food are safer measures.
