1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThey do—though the animal beside a capybara in a South American wetland is often a caiman, not a true crocodile. Caimans sometimes prey on capybaras, but a calm encounter in a photo or video shows only that no attack happened in that moment. It does not reveal a permanent truce or explain why that particular caiman did not strike.
Do crocodiles eat capybaras?
Yes, crocodilians can eat capybaras. In the Pantanal, the crocodilian commonly seen with capybaras is the Yacare caiman (Caiman yacare). A 2014 paper on capybara ecology reports that Yacare caimans are known to prey on juvenile and subadult capybaras. That establishes that predation occurs; it does not tell us how often it happens or provide an attack rate comparing young and adult capybaras. Read the 2014 capybara ecology paper.
The distinction matters: evidence about Yacare caimans should not be treated as evidence about every crocodile species. The 1996 diet study used the name Caiman crocodilus yacare, its classification at the time; the animal is commonly called Caiman yacare today.
Why don’t they attack in every encounter?
A predator and potential prey can be close without an attack occurring. A still image or short clip cannot show what happened before or after, establish the caiman’s hunger or intent, or prove that capybaras are safe beside it. The available studies do not test why a caiman ignored a capybara in any particular viral clip.

There is also no basis here for claiming that capybaras have special immunity or that caimans and capybaras are friends. Any explanation for one uneventful encounter—such as the animals’ immediate circumstances—is a hypothesis unless it has been directly tested.
What a caiman’s diet study can—and can’t—tell us
Santos and colleagues analyzed stomach contents from 196 Yacare caimans in different Brazilian Pantanal habitats during the dry season. Their 1996 paper reports that the sampled caimans ate mostly insects and fish, and that diets differed significantly among habitats. Read the study in the Herpetological Journal.

This is evidence of a varied diet in that study’s dry-season sample, not proof that caimans never eat capybaras or a measure of how often they attack them. The diet paper and the report of predation answer different questions: one describes stomach contents in a particular sample, while the other records that capybaras can be prey.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do capybaras sit next to caimans?
Being near a caiman does not mean a capybara is unaware of danger or that the predator poses no risk. A 2022 study compared capybara responses to mammalian predator risk in the Pantanal and Iberá, including observations and playback of jaguar calls. It studied responses to mammalian predators—not how often caimans attack capybaras. Read the 2022 study in Animal Behaviour.

A CONICET summary of that work reports that Pantanal capybaras showed high group cohesion, foraged near water, and limited activity to daylight hours. These findings describe behavior in the study; they do not demonstrate that a capybara sitting near a caiman is protected. Read the CONICET summary.

How to interpret a photo or video
- Identify the animal carefully: In the Pantanal, a crocodilian in the scene is often a Yacare caiman.
- Separate proximity from safety: Animals being near one another at one moment does not establish a lasting relationship or guarantee that an attack will not occur.
- Keep the evidence in scope: Studies support a varied diet in one dry-season caiman sample and report predation on juvenile and subadult capybaras. They do not establish how often caimans kill adult capybaras.
