Wikie, a female killer whale at Marineland in Antibes, France, imitated human-modeled sounds in a 2018 experiment—including sounds presented as “hello,” “Amy” and “ah ah.” Researchers reported that she copied the modeled sounds “hello” and “one, two, three” on the first trial. The finding shows vocal mimicry, not that Wikie understood those words or spoke human language.

What did Wikie imitate?

Researchers asked Wikie to copy sounds made by a model, using a “do-as-I-do” experiment. The demonstrations included familiar and novel killer whale calls as well as human speech-like sounds. The researchers judged her vocalizations to be recognizable copies of the tested sounds.

The 2018 study reported six novel human sounds. Recognizable copies of the human models appeared before the seventeenth trial; “hello” and “one, two, three” were copied on the first trial. The authors wrote that Wikie made recognizable copies of all the familiar and novel killer whale and human sounds tested, with most learned during the first 10 trials and three copied on the first attempt. Read the 2018 study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Did Wikie understand what she was copying?

The experiment tested whether Wikie could reproduce sounds after hearing them. It did not test whether she understood the words’ meanings, used them as vocabulary, formed sentences, or intended to communicate in human language. So “Wikie said hello” is a catchy shorthand, not a precise description: she imitated a sound modeled as “hello.”

This distinction matters because recognizable sound imitation and language comprehension are different abilities. The study supports vocal production learning—the ability to learn to produce a sound by hearing a model—without showing that Wikie attached a human meaning to her copies.

How does this compare with reports of other killer whale sounds?

A separate 2006 field study described a juvenile wild killer whale, L98, making bark-like underwater calls. Researchers recorded 39 sounds they identified aurally as barks; 16 were recorded in daylight when only L98, and no sea lions, were observed in the area. Based on acoustic comparisons, the authors wrote that the data “strongly imply an instance of mimicry.” This was an interpretation of field observations, not a controlled test of human-sound imitation. Read the 2006 field study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Case Setting and subject Sound at issue What the evidence supports
Wikie, 2018 Controlled experiment; a 14-year-old killer whale at Marineland in Antibes, France Human-model sounds and familiar and novel killer whale sounds Recognizable vocal copies after demonstrations; not demonstrated word comprehension or language
L98, 2006 Field observations of a juvenile wild killer whale Bark-like calls compared with sea-lion sounds Authors said observations strongly implied mimicry; not human speech imitation

Another often-mentioned cetacean example is a 2012 report of spontaneous human-voice mimicry by a beluga. A beluga is not a killer whale, so that case should not be attributed to Wikie or treated as evidence about killer whales specifically. Read the 2012 beluga report in Current Biology.

What does the experiment tell us about orca communication?

Wikie’s performance is evidence that a killer whale can learn to reproduce unfamiliar sounds, including sounds modeled by humans. It does not establish how widespread that ability is among killer whales, how it develops in wild populations, or what a copied human sound means to the animal. The experiment involved one subject in a captive setting, so its result should not be treated as a population-wide measure.
