Brazil’s “most important sloth sanctuary” is not an official title or a verified national ranking. The organization most plausibly associated with that phrase is Instituto Vida Livre in Rio de Janeiro—but it is a broad wildlife rehabilitation and release organization, not a sloth-only refuge, and its rehabilitation center is not open to visitors.
Which organization does the title refer to?
The best-supported match is Instituto Vida Livre, a Brazilian wildlife organization that says it has worked in conservation, rehabilitation and release since 2015, alongside research, education and advocacy. The federal government’s listing for Instituto Vida Livre classifies it as a wildlife rehabilitation and release center.
Neither source calls it Brazil’s most important sloth sanctuary, and the institute does not describe itself as a sloth-only facility. The available information supports explaining its wildlife work, but not a national ranking or claim that it is the country’s leading sloth organization.
What does Instituto Vida Livre do?
Its Espaço Vida Livre is an INEA-RJ-authorized wildlife rehabilitation center in Rio de Janeiro. The institute says the service opened in 2021 and provides daily, free support to wildlife and public agencies. Animals arriving at the center are identified, microchipped and given individualized treatment, according to its rehabilitation center page.

- very soft and cute
- like really sloth
The institute works with many kinds of Brazilian wildlife, rather than focusing exclusively on sloths. Its listed activities include rehabilitation, release areas, fauna maintenance, repatriation, research and advocacy.
The organization’s website displays cumulative figures of more than 15,000 animals attended, more than 350 species attended and more than 84 million square metres across eleven release areas. The page does not state when those totals were compiled or describe a reporting method, so they should be read as undated figures published by the institute, not as independently audited statistics. The center page also displays a capacity of “+3K” annual animal attendance, “+70” equipment items and “+500” medical-veterinary protocols; it gives no reporting year or methodology for those figures.

Can you visit the center or see sloths there?
No public visit or sloth encounter is offered: Instituto Vida Livre says its headquarters is not open to visitors and describes the center as a hospital. Its FAQ says it receives animals brought by competent authorities and members of the public. The address published by the institute is Rua Caminhoá, 11, Jardim Botânico, Rio de Janeiro; check its current contact and FAQ page for visitor and contact information.
The FAQ also says the institute does not maintain a standing citywide rapid-response rescue team or vehicle. Staff may be able to help with a nearby incident if available, but that is not a guaranteed response service. Do not take a wild animal to the center or handle it based only on this article; first follow current guidance from the relevant wildlife or public authorities.

- There's a piece of cloth on it(just protect Velcro strips). You can tear it off so that Velcro strips can work well.
How does sloth conservation in Brazil extend beyond rehabilitation?
Sloth conservation also involves protecting the habitat animals need to move and survive. The Sloth Conservation Foundation describes a separate project in Mata de São João, Bahia, where five donated canopy bridges connect fragmented Atlantic Forest habitat used by the endangered northern maned sloth (Bradypus torquatus). The project page names Projeto Conecta-Vidas, Aruá Observação de Vida Silvestre and the Applied Ecology and Conservation Lab at the State University of Santa Cruz among its partners. This habitat-connectivity effort is distinct from Instituto Vida Livre’s Rio rehabilitation service; the available sources do not establish a partnership between the organizations. Read the Sloth Conservation Foundation’s Brazil project account for details.

Instituto Vida Livre offers donation options and invites organizational support through partnerships, sponsorships or donations on its official website. Those are ways to support the institute’s wider wildlife work, not a sloth-specific program identified in the available information.
