The “new formidable predator” is Dulcibella camanchaca, a newly described amphipod found nearly 8 kilometers below the ocean surface in the Atacama Trench. It is only about 4 centimeters long, but unlike many deep-sea amphipods that scavenge, it actively hunts smaller amphipods with specialized grasping appendages.
What is the new deep-sea predator?
Dulcibella camanchaca is a small crustacean in the order Amphipoda and family Eusiridae. Researchers described it as both a new species and a new genus after comparing its physical features with DNA evidence. The peer-reviewed description calls it a large predator for the hadal environment, not a large animal by ordinary standards. The taxonomic paper reports the formal description; the journal later issued a correction to its nomenclatural record.
Where and how deep was it found?
Researchers collected four individuals at 7,902 meters in the Atacama Trench during the 2023 Integrated Deep-Ocean Observing System expedition aboard Chile’s R/V Abate Molina. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution reported the collection and depth in 2024. The trench lies in the eastern South Pacific off northern Chile and Peru; it reaches more than 8,000 meters at its deepest. WHOI’s account of the discovery describes the specimens recovered by lander.
The collection depth is within the hadal zone, which Universidad de Concepción describes as extending from 6,000 to 11,000 meters. This zone is dark, cold, under immense water pressure, and food-limited. The Atacama Trench is also geographically remote from other hadal environments. How does it hunt?
The amphipod is nearly 4 centimeters long, according to WHOI’s 2024 report. It uses specialized raptorial appendages—limbs adapted for seizing prey—and jaws to capture smaller amphipods. That makes it an active predator rather than a scavenger feeding mainly on dead material. “Formidable” describes its hunting equipment and role in a harsh deep-sea setting, not its size as a threat to people or larger animals.
Study co-lead author Johanna Weston, a WHOI hadal ecologist, described it as “a fast-swimming predator” and said the name refers to darkness in languages of peoples from the Andes region. The institutional reporting does not establish how often it hunts or how much prey it consumes.

Why do scientists call it a new genus as well as a new species?
A species is a particular kind of organism; a genus groups closely related species. The researchers combined anatomical examination and DNA barcoding with systematics, and the evidence indicated that D. camanchaca was distinct enough to represent a new genus, not merely a previously unknown species within a known genus. Study co-lead author Johanna Weston said the agreement between DNA and morphology also emphasizes the Atacama Trench as an endemic hotspot. That is evidence of distinctiveness, not a measurement of how many species live there.
The genus name has a separate naming story: Universidad de Concepción reports that “Dulcibella” was selected after “Dulcinea” was unavailable as an insect genus name; “camanchaca” is associated with coastal fog and darkness in the region. The corrected journal record should be consulted for formal nomenclatural authorship.

What does this discovery tell us—and what does it not?
The finding documents an active predator and a new genus in a food-limited hadal environment. Many hadal amphipods are scavengers, so a species that hunts live prey adds a different kind of ecological interaction to the picture. Carolina González, a study co-lead author from the Instituto Milenio de Oceanografía, said the collaborative study confirmed a new species and highlighted continuing biodiversity discoveries in the trench.
