A 2025 report describes a newly identified genus of jumping spiders, Ourea, from alpine areas of New Zealand’s South Island. Robin Long’s reported survey covered 19 alpine areas over two years and identified 12 species. The spiders can be difficult to find among rocks, but “masters of camouflage” is a vivid headline description—not a result established by controlled tests of their camouflage.
What was discovered?
New Zealand Geographic reported that Robin Long, then a master’s student at Lincoln University, identified the genus Ourea and 12 species within it. The report describes the work as a two-year survey across 19 alpine areas of the South Island. The 12-species figure is the magazine’s account of Long’s findings; the sources available here do not independently verify it against the underlying taxonomic paper.
Jumping spiders are known for their ability to jump. Long put it simply in the report: “they also jump”. The discovery is notable for adding a reported genus of alpine jumping spiders to New Zealand’s spider fauna, rather than for demonstrating an unusual jumping ability.
Where do Ourea spiders live, and how were they found?
Long often found the spiders beneath rocks, where they sheltered in silken “tents,” according to New Zealand Geographic. That setting helps explain why they may be easy to overlook: small spiders tucked beneath stones are not conspicuous during a casual walk through alpine terrain.

One reported species name, petroides, refers to the rock it mimics. The name points to a resemblance, but it does not by itself show how effective that resemblance is or what consequences it has for the spider.
Are they scientifically proven masters of camouflage?
Not on the evidence described in the available reporting. The spiders were difficult to spot, and the name petroides invokes rock mimicry, but those observations are not the same as an experiment measuring camouflage effectiveness. The consulted sources do not establish a controlled test, a survival advantage, or a particular predator-avoidance mechanism for Ourea.

Camouflage is known in other New Zealand spiders, but examples should not be confused with evidence about this genus. Te Papa notes that the crab spider Cymbachina albobrunnea is often found on lichen and has a colour pattern that blends with that background. Crab spiders are a different group from the jumping spiders in Ourea.
How does this fit New Zealand’s spider diversity?
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa says the country has over 1,100 known spider species, about 95 per cent of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Those national figures provide context for the reported discovery; they are not counts of Ourea, and they do not mean every New Zealand spider species is endemic.

New Zealand Geographic supplies the genus name, the reported total of 12 species, and an account of Long’s fieldwork. The sources cited here do not provide the primary taxonomic paper, its formal publication date, a complete species list, diagnostic features, or confirmation of the genus’s current nomenclatural status. For a definitive identification or taxonomic account, those details would need to be checked in the formal scientific publication.
