The record confirms the otter’s presence at one river confluence; it does not show that the species had gone extinct in Nepal or establish how many otters live there.
What was found in Nepal?
The animal was a juvenile Asian small-clawed otter, Aonyx cinereus. Researchers report that a local person found and captured it in November 2024 at the confluence of the Rangun Khola and Puntara Khola in Parsuram Municipality-12, Dadeldhura District. The paper gives the location as 29.132819°N, 80.335374°E, at 401 metres above sea level.
The Rangun Khola flows downstream into the Mahakali, also known as the Sarada, and then the Karnali River in India. This is a specific observation in far-western Nepal, not evidence that otters were rediscovered throughout the country.
Why do reports say 185 years, not 186?
The study by Shrestha and co-authors calls this Nepal’s first photographic evidence of Asian small-clawed otters in 185 years. It says the previous report dated to 1839 and that no confirmed evidence had appeared in the interval. The supplied headline’s “186 years” does not match the paper’s stated interval, so 185 years is the more accurate description of the study’s claim. Read the 2025 report.

The authors’ phrase is: “Here, we present the first photographic evidence of Asian Small-clawed Otter in Nepal in 185 years.” This describes a gap in confirmed evidence; it does not prove the species disappeared and then returned.
How was the otter identified?
After the animal was captured, it was transferred to a nearby Sub-division Forest Office, cared for for a week, and released into the wild. A forest officer shared photographs and video with researchers. Members of the IUCN Otter Specialist Group confirmed the identification from the images and the animal’s morphological characteristics.

The report describes image-based identification. It does not report a genetic test, camera-trap survey, or systematic search of the surrounding rivers as part of confirming this individual.
What does one juvenile tell us about the population?
The sighting establishes that at least one Asian small-clawed otter was present at that location and time. The authors infer that a juvenile suggests other otters may be in the area, but the paper provides no population estimate, survey-wide count, or measured trend. A single record cannot establish whether numbers are rising, falling, or stable.

Nepal’s Otter Action Plan, whose research focus was 2020–2022 and which predates this observation, describes the country’s otter surveys as few and nonsystematic, with distribution not thoroughly understood. It identifies camera trapping, genetic analysis, and environmental DNA (eDNA) as possible tools for documenting distribution and confirming species identity. Those are potential approaches for future work, not evidence gathered in the 2024 case. See the Nepal Otter Action Plan.
What was the habitat like, and what risks did the authors note?
The authors made a brief baseline assessment at four points: the sighting location, one kilometre upstream on each of the two rivers, and one kilometre downstream. The area lies near the settlements of Katar and Jogbudha, and the otter was seen at the edge of leasehold forest.

At the time described, reduced post-monsoon flow had left a shallow, tranquil channel. Banks included stones, sand, and mud, with sparse vegetation. The study also records human activity in the area and nearby river reaches:
- Fishing, washing, and bathing in the rivers.
- Extraction of sand and stone, including mining of construction materials.
- Five micro-hydro plants on the Rangun Khola.
- Fishing practices the authors warn can harm aquatic life, including draining water, trapping fish in rice paddies, and increasing use of poison and explosives.
- Broader pressures they list: deforestation, habitat degradation, overgrazing, pollution, and agricultural runoff.
These are conditions and risks described by the study; it does not establish that any one of them caused harm to the juvenile. The authors specifically warn that increasing extraction of construction materials from local rivers, especially the Puntara Khola, may affect aquatic life.

What is known about the otter’s conservation status?
The 2025 report describes the Asian small-clawed otter as globally Vulnerable, citing an IUCN assessment. Nepal’s 2011 national mammal assessment listed the species as Data Deficient. The Nepal Otter Action Plan repeats those historical assessments and says they need revision because of information gaps. The national label is from 2011, not a new assessment prompted by the 2024 sighting.
The Action Plan provides pre-sighting context about limited survey coverage; it should not be read as an update on the population after the Dadeldhura record.
Is it the world’s smallest otter?
A June 2, 2025 article by George Mitchell in Discover Wildlife describes the Asian small-clawed otter as the world’s smallest otter species. The Nepal study identifies the animal but does not compare otter sizes; the superlative is background about the species, not a finding from the Nepal sighting. Read the Discover Wildlife report.
What should happen next?
The study’s authors call for a national otter survey, research on ecology and phylogeny, and conservation measures at priority sites. A broader survey could establish where otters occur and provide a basis for assessing their status; the 2024 photographs alone cannot answer those questions. The authors also urge attention to river-material extraction and other pressures on aquatic habitats.
The observation is therefore an important confirmed record after a long evidence gap, but not proof of a national recovery. Its main conservation value is to show that Asian small-clawed otters are present in Nepal and that better surveys are needed to understand their distribution and needs.
