Its fossil femur measures about 1.9 metres, while estimates that the living animal reached roughly 30 metres and 40–50 tonnes come from a 2023 announcement by the Government of Río Negro—not from measurements of a complete skeleton. The claim that its fossils cracked a road during transport appears in a later news article, but is not confirmed in the scientific description or official reports cited here.
What dinosaur does the headline describe?
Chucarosaurus diripienda is a newly named genus and species of giant titanosaurian sauropod. It lived in what is now Río Negro Province, in Argentine Patagonia. The 2023 scientific description places it in the Huincul Formation of the Neuquén Basin, in strata dated to the middle Cenomanian–lower Turonian stages of the Upper Cretaceous.
Titanosaurs were long-necked, four-legged sauropod dinosaurs. In this case, the name refers to a fossil animal known from limb bones, not a fully preserved skeleton.
How big was it, and what was actually measured?
The peer-reviewed description reports a femur about 1.9 metres long and characterizes the preserved appendicular bones—the bones of the limbs—as relatively slender. That femur measurement is a measurement of fossil material. It is not the length or weight of the whole animal.

The Government of Río Negro’s 15 May 2023 announcement estimated the animal at around 30 metres long and 40–50 tonnes. Those are whole-animal estimates attributed to the provincial announcement; they should not be mistaken for direct measurements from a complete skeleton. The distinction matters because the known fossils are incomplete, and reconstructing an animal’s overall dimensions from parts requires estimation.
| Claim | What the source reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Femur length | About 1.9 m, in the 2023 scientific description | A measurement of a fossil bone, not the complete dinosaur’s length |
| Whole-animal length | About 30 m, in the Government of Río Negro’s 15 May 2023 announcement | A provincial-announcement estimate |
| Whole-animal mass | 40–50 tonnes, in the Government of Río Negro’s 15 May 2023 announcement | A provincial-announcement estimate, not a direct measurement |
What fossils were found, and where?
CONICET, Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council, reports that a field campaign in late 2019 found remains from two individuals about 25 kilometres south of Villa El Chocón. The material consists of different limb elements rather than a complete skeleton. CONICET said the remains were to be exhibited at the Museo Provincial Carlos Ameghino in Cipolletti.

- Plastic pieces snap together easily and the included base allows for easy display of your built skeleton.
- Includes an 8-page, full-color descriptive manual.
The incomplete but informative limb material is central to what scientists can say about the species: it offers evidence about anatomy and variation, while leaving the full animal’s dimensions as estimates.
Why is the discovery scientifically useful?
The paper highlights anatomical differences among the femur, ischium and tibia and argues that limb bones can provide useful evidence for studying titanosaur relationships. The significance is not simply that the animal was estimated to be very large: the fossils also broaden the known range of variation in titanosaur limb anatomy.

In a CONICET account, study coauthor and paleontologist Bernardo González Riga explains that the study expands knowledge of titanosaur limb bones, which have traits that can help distinguish species and show greater morphological diversity than previously recognized. He suggests that those differences may have been linked to ecological adaptations in the continental river environments where the animals lived. This is a translation of his Spanish statement, not a verbatim English quotation.

A Daily Galaxy article published on 30 October 2025 says that fossil blocks cracked asphalt during transport. The peer-reviewed description and the official CONICET and Río Negro government reports cited here do not corroborate that event. On the available evidence, the road damage should be treated as an unverified detail reported by that secondary article, not as an established fact about Chucarosaurus.
