Can Fish Feel Pain? What a Study of Trout Slaughter Says—and What Needs Reform

A 2025 study estimated 10 minutes of moderate-to-extreme pain for rainbow trout slaughtered by air asphyxia. Here is what that estimate does—and does not—say about fish pain and reform.

The “over 10 minutes” claim needs context. A 2025 study estimated that rainbow trout killed by air asphyxia at slaughter experience 10 minutes of moderate-to-extreme pain on average, with a modelled range of 1.9–21.7 minutes. It did not measure pain in fish after they were caught in general, nor establish a timed experience for every fish. The study strengthens the case for effective slaughter methods, but its estimate is a framework-based assessment rather than a direct report of subjective experience.

What the 2025 study actually found

Schuck-Paim and colleagues examined the welfare impact of air asphyxia in rainbow trout slaughter. Using a framework that combines evidence on stress, behavior, neurophysiology and pharmacology, the authors estimated 10 minutes of moderate-to-extreme pain per trout, with a range of 1.9–21.7 minutes. Standardized by weight, their estimate was 24 minutes per kilogram, with a range of 3.5–74 minutes per kilogram. Read the study in Scientific Reports.

Those figures are estimates of cumulative time in affective states at differing intensities. They are not the result of directly measuring a fish’s subjective experience or asking a fish to report pain. The paper is specifically about rainbow trout killed by air asphyxia at slaughter. It does not show that all fish suffer intense pain for more than ten minutes after capture, whether in recreational fishing, commercial fishing or another setting.

The headline phrase “scientists prove fish suffer intense pain for 10 minutes after catch” therefore goes beyond what this study supports. The paper’s estimate is significant, but its species, slaughter method and evidence-based welfare framework matter to how it should be understood.

Can fish feel pain? Why scientists disagree

Fish can detect and respond to potentially damaging stimuli, a process called nociception. Whether such responses establish conscious, felt pain is a separate and contested question. A review supporting the case for fish pain points to peripheral nociceptors, changes in brain activity, behavioral and physiological responses, and responses to analgesia as relevant evidence. Its authors argue that fish meet criteria used to assess animal pain when direct subjective reporting is not required. Read the review on fish pain.

Other reviews argue that nociception and observable responses do not, by themselves, prove conscious pain. A 2019 review questions whether fish responses to noxious stimuli are sufficient to establish pain and says some evidence has been overinterpreted; an earlier critical review by Rose and colleagues also challenges the conclusion that fish pain has been demonstrated. Read the 2019 review and Rose and colleagues’ critical review.

The disagreement is about how to interpret evidence and infer conscious experience—not whether harmful stimuli can cause injury or stress. The trout slaughter study applies a framework that weighs multiple evidence lines to estimate welfare impact. Readers should distinguish that kind of evidence-based estimate from direct proof of an individual fish’s subjective experience.

What reform at slaughter could involve

The study identifies stunning as a potential way to reduce suffering during slaughter. The practical goal is not simply to use a named technique: a method should cause unconsciousness immediately and keep the fish unconscious until death. Handling before stunning should also be minimized.

Approach discussed What the study says What to assess in practice
Electrical stunning Potentially effective, but commercial performance varies. Whether the system consistently induces immediate unconsciousness and maintains it until death; how it performs under actual commercial conditions.
Percussive stunning Described as reliably effective, with implementation challenges. Whether staff and equipment can apply it consistently and achieve unconsciousness before the fish is killed.

The paper’s cost-effectiveness model estimated that electrical stunning could avert 60–1,200 minutes of moderate-to-extreme pain per US dollar of capital expenditure. This is a modelled range from the study, not a guaranteed commercial outcome or a universal comparison of facilities. Actual performance and implementation matter, and the authors do not establish one method as the best choice in every setting.

Reform should therefore focus on verifying outcomes: rapid loss of consciousness, unconsciousness lasting until death, reliable operation at commercial scale, and less handling before stunning. A method’s label alone does not establish that those conditions are met.

What anglers can do about catch-and-release harm

Catch-and-release fishing is a different situation from trout slaughter, and hook choices do not resolve slaughter welfare. They can, however, reduce some injuries and handling stress for fish that are released. NOAA Fisheries cautions that release alone does not guarantee survival: “Simply letting a fish go does not guarantee it will live.” See NOAA Fisheries’ catch-and-release guidance.

  • Choose suitable hooks. Circle hooks, barbless hooks or hooks with crimped barbs can make release easier. A peer-reviewed review reports that barbless and circle hooks generally reduce injury rates and the severity of tissue trauma; effectiveness still depends on the species and fishing conditions. Read the review of catch-and-release practices.
  • Reduce capture and handling time. Land the fish promptly and handle it as little as possible.
  • Limit air exposure. Keep the fish in the water as much as practicable while removing the hook and releasing it.
  • Follow local fishing regulations. Rules can vary by location and species; check the requirements that apply to your fishing area.

These practices can lower some risks, but no hook type or release technique guarantees survival. Their purpose is to reduce avoidable injury and time out of water—not to imply that catch-and-release measures answer the welfare questions raised by slaughter.
