Scientists used the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), a giant electron accelerator in Grenoble, France, to scan fragile dinosaur embryos still enclosed in fossil material. The non-destructive X-ray scans revealed 3D details of Massospondylus carinatus skulls and showed the embryos were estimated to be only about 60% through incubation—not close to hatching, as previously thought.
Which dinosaur eggs were scanned?
The study examined eggs containing embryos of Massospondylus carinatus, a plant-eating dinosaur from what is now South Africa. The clutch was unearthed in 1976 at Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Researchers scanned the fossils at ESRF in 2015, and the study was published in Scientific Reports on 9 April 2020.
This is distinct from another 2020 synchrotron study of a roughly 80-million-year-old sauropod egg from Patagonia, Argentina. That work reconstructed parts of an embryo skull in a rock-embedded egg; its location, dinosaur, and age do not apply to the South African Massospondylus fossils.
How did an accelerator reveal what was inside?
ESRF accelerates electrons around a large storage ring to generate high-powered X-rays for research imaging. The ring’s circumference is 844 metres, according to ESRF. Unlike a hospital CT scanner, this is a specialized facility designed to produce exceptionally detailed scans of objects such as fossils.

- Realistic oviraptor dinosaur egg cast
- Approximately 6" long
- Great addition to prehistoric fossil collections or as a gift for paleontology lovers
The embryo bones were extremely delicate and partly enclosed in surrounding fossil material, making physical extraction risky. Synchrotron X-rays let the team image the fossils without removing and assembling the bones. Researchers described the resulting resolution as fine as an individual bone cell. They then spent nearly three years processing the scan data and digitally reconstructed the embryo skulls in 3D.
As Natural History Museum micro-CT scanning manager Vincent Fernandez explained, “It is difficult to scan embryos because their bones are not very well ossified so their density is very similar to the surrounding material.” The contrast and detail in the scans helped researchers distinguish the developing bones from the material around them.

What did the scans show about development?
Before the new analysis, the embryos had been interpreted as close to hatching. By comparing the skull bones visible in the scans with development in living crocodiles, chickens, turtles, and lizards, lead researcher Kimberley Chapelle estimated that the Massospondylus embryos were about 60% through incubation. This is a comparative estimate, not a direct measurement of elapsed time.
The jaws also contained two kinds of developing teeth. One set consisted of simple early teeth, 0.4–0.7 millimetres wide, that researchers expected to be shed or resorbed before hatching. A second set resembled adult teeth and was expected to remain at hatching. The findings suggest that the sequence of skull development in Massospondylus resembled that of living reptilian relatives; they do not establish that every dinosaur lineage developed in the same way.

Were the dinosaur embryos perfectly preserved?
“Perfectly preserved” is too absolute if taken literally. The fossils are delicate, and their bones remain partly enclosed in fossil material. Their importance is that preservation was good enough for detailed, non-destructive imaging and digital reconstruction—not that they escaped fossilization, damage, or all uncertainty.
The scans changed what researchers could learn without physically exposing the bones: they revised the embryos’ estimated stage of development and revealed two tooth sets in the jaws. The conclusions depend on reconstructed images and comparisons with living animals, rather than direct observation of an unaltered embryo.
