A small piece of woolly-rhino muscle found in the stomach of a permafrost-preserved wolf pup has yielded one of the youngest known genomes from the species. Compared with two older woolly-rhino genomes, it showed no detected recent inbreeding or genomic erosion. That finding supports the idea that at least the sampled population remained relatively stable before extinction, but it does not identify one definitive cause.
What did the frozen wolf cub reveal?
The evidence was not a whole rhinoceros inside a wolf. Researchers recovered a piece of woolly-rhino muscle from the stomach of a preserved wolf pup found near Tumat in northeastern Siberia. Radiocarbon dating put the tissue at about 14,400 years old, making it one of the youngest known woolly-rhino remains. Researchers sequenced its genome and compared it with genomes from rhinos that lived about 18,500 and 48,500 years ago.
The genomic analysis found no detected recent inbreeding or genetic erosion in the late sample relative to those two older specimens. In other words, this particular animal’s genome did not show the signs of a prolonged genetic collapse that might be expected if a population had been declining genetically for a long time. The peer-reviewed study appeared in Genome Biology and Evolution on 14 January 2026: “Genome Shows no Recent Inbreeding in Near-Extinction Woolly Rhinoceros Sample Found in Ancient Wolf’s Stomach”.
Does this explain how the woolly rhino went extinct?
It narrows the possibilities, but it is not a definitive answer. The result is consistent with a comparatively stable regional population followed by a relatively rapid extinction, rather than a long, detectable genetic decline in the sampled lineage. It cannot establish that all woolly-rhino populations were stable, because the comparison rests on one late genome and two older ones.

Climate warming near the end of the last Ice Age is a plausible factor discussed in coverage of the finding. But this genome does not prove that climate change alone caused the extinction. It records genetic information from one animal; it does not directly measure the environmental pressures, geography, or other conditions affecting every remaining rhino population.
Did a wolf pup really eat a woolly rhino?
Rhino tissue was present in the pup’s stomach, but how it got there is unknown. The evidence does not show that the pup killed an adult rhinoceros. The meat could have come from a younger rhino, from scavenging, or from food brought by an adult wolf.

The rhino-tissue genome study is separate from a 2025 study of the two Tumat pups. Those cubs were found in separate discoveries near Tumat, in 2011 and 2015; researchers identified them as sisters and as wolves, not early domestic dogs. They were around two months old and had begun eating solid food while still showing signs of nursing. Their remains also contained evidence of plant and animal foods. The University of York account of the cub study was distributed by ScienceDaily: University of York’s account of the Tumat puppies study.

The 2025 study concluded that the two Tumat cubs were wolves rather than early domestic dogs. Their identification matters because black fur in ancient canids, by itself, does not establish domestication. The cubs’ wolf identity also does not change what the later rhino-genome study found: the stomach tissue provided an unusual source of ancient DNA, but the demonstrated result is this specimen, not a general method already validated across other finds.
