Do Freshwater Fish Drink Water?

Freshwater fish usually don’t swallow water for hydration. Osmosis brings water into their bodies, and they excrete the excess as dilute urine.

Most freshwater fish do not need to swallow water to stay hydrated. Because their body fluids contain more dissolved salts than the surrounding freshwater, water moves into them by osmosis, mainly across the gills. They get rid of the excess in large amounts of dilute urine while conserving salts.

Why water enters freshwater fish

Osmosis is the net movement of water across a permeable membrane toward the side with a higher concentration of dissolved substances. A freshwater fish’s body fluids are more concentrated than the water around it, so water tends to move into the fish while salts tend to move out. The thin, permeable gills are an important site for this exchange.

This steady influx is normal, not a danger that makes the fish swell uncontrollably. The fish regulates its internal balance through osmoregulation: its kidneys remove excess water as dilute urine, while the gills and other processes help retain or take up salts. The kidneys and gills work together to maintain that balance.

Does water passing through the mouth mean a fish is drinking?

Not necessarily. Many bony fish move water into the mouth and over the gills so oxygen can be taken up and carbon dioxide released. That respiratory flow is different from swallowing water into the digestive tract for hydration. The Government of Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development explains this distinction in its Fish Adaptations fact sheet.

Freshwater fish also gain water across the gills and oral membranes, as described by the Victorian Fisheries Authority. That is water moving across permeable surfaces, not drinking in the usual sense.

How freshwater and marine fish differ

Many marine bony fish face the opposite osmotic challenge: their body fluids are less concentrated than seawater, so water tends to leave their bodies. They commonly drink seawater and absorb water through the gut, while removing excess salts and producing smaller amounts of more concentrated urine. Freshwater fish generally gain water and must excrete it instead.

Typical pattern Freshwater fish Many marine bony fish
Body fluids compared with surrounding water More concentrated than freshwater Less concentrated than seawater
Net tendency of water movement Water enters the fish Water leaves the fish
Usual hydration strategy Generally do not need to drink; water enters across permeable surfaces Drink seawater and absorb water through the gut
Urine and salt balance Excrete large amounts of dilute urine and retain or take up salts Produce smaller amounts of more concentrated urine and remove excess salts

This is the common freshwater-versus-marine pattern, not a rule that applies identically to every fish. Species differ in their tolerance of salinity, and fish that migrate between fresh and salt water can adjust their osmoregulatory systems. Virginia Tech Extension discusses these roles of gills, kidneys and migration in its guide to Virginia’s freshwater fishes.
