Rescuers initially estimated the humpback whale stranded near Timmendorfer Strand, Germany, at about 10 metres long. A revised estimate put it at 12–15 metres and around 15 tonnes, according to a report citing the Institute for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research (ITAW). The whale briefly swam free after crews dug a channel, but stranded again and later died near Denmark.
What did rescuers find, and how big was the whale?
The whale was stranded on a sandbank near Timmendorfer Strand in Lübeck Bay in March 2026. Rescuers found parts of fishing net around it. An early estimate put its length at roughly 10 metres; a later estimate was 12–15 metres long and approximately 15 tonnes. Those revised figures were reported by Spektrum, citing ITAW. They are estimates, not a published direct measurement record, so the precise size is not established here. The March 29 report describes the reassessment and the rescue effort.
How did the first rescue attempt go?
Crews tried several approaches, including using boats to create waves and dredging. They then excavated a channel through the sandbank. Heavy machinery dug the channel, and the whale swam back to sea overnight, as Deutsche Welle reported on March 27. That was a temporary release, not a lasting rescue: the whale later stranded again in Wismar Bay.
Why did experts urge less intervention?
By April, the whale had repeatedly re-stranded and was deteriorating. In an April 21 statement, the International Whaling Commission’s Strandings Expert Panel urged welfare-focused care and minimal disturbance. It warned: “Where repeated efforts have failed and the animal remains in a severely weakened state, additional attempts to handle, move, or stimulate the whale are liable to constitute further disturbance and stress rather than meaningful rescue.” The statement gives the panel’s position, not a complete clinical record of the animal’s condition. What happened to the whale afterward?
After another stranding, rescuers moved the whale by barge in a final attempt to guide it toward the North Sea. It was found dead near Anholt, Denmark, on May 14, and officials identified it as the whale previously stranded in Germany. German media had called it “Timmy” and “Hope.”
Tracking data suggested it died around May 6 or 7, after traveling about 215 kilometres (134 miles) in the five days following its release. The reported route was in the wrong direction for reaching the Atlantic. An Associated Press report published June 12 said an autopsy had not determined the cause of death. Officials also said the whale was female, despite earlier assumptions that it was male. The AP report summarizes the identification and tracking information.

Why was the humpback in the Baltic Sea?
The reason remains unclear. AP reported that experts had suggested possibilities such as following herring or becoming lost during migration, but neither explanation was established. The available reporting also does not establish why the whale repeatedly stranded.
