A camera trap in Vietnam’s Pu Mat National Park photographed an Annamite striped rabbit, an elusive endangered species rarely seen in the wild. The image comes from a survey Fauna & Flora says ran throughout 2025 across the Annamite Mountains. It is a rare glimpse—not the rabbit’s discovery: the species has been known to science since 1996.
What the camera captured
The highlighted image shows an Annamite striped rabbit (Nesolagus timminsi) in Pu Mat National Park, Vietnam. Fauna & Flora’s account also describes camera-trap records of other wildlife from the survey, but does not state how many cameras were deployed, how many images were collected, or how many times the rabbit was photographed.
A rare sighting, not a newly discovered species
The Annamite striped rabbit is endangered and rarely encountered. It was unknown to science until 1996, when dead specimens were seen in a market in Laos, according to Fauna & Flora. The 2025 survey therefore offered another glimpse of a known species; it did not establish the rabbit as new to science or as newly found in the mountains. Fauna & Flora’s account of the camera-trap survey provides the report’s context.
Where and when the survey took place
The Annamite Mountains extend for 1,100 kilometres through Laos, Vietnam and north-east Cambodia, as described by Fauna & Flora in 2026. Its account says the camera-trap survey took place throughout 2025 across the mountain range. The phrase “Asia’s Amazon,” used as a nickname for the region, is a metaphor rather than a formal geographic designation.

What camera-trap records can—and cannot—tell us
Camera traps can document wildlife presence in places where animals are difficult to observe directly. Records can help researchers build knowledge of animal behavior, habitats and interactions. But the account does not provide a rabbit population estimate, a total number of detections, or evidence that the species’ population is increasing. A photograph is valuable evidence of presence, not by itself a measure of how many rabbits live in the region.
Why the records matter for conservation
Fauna & Flora identifies habitat encroachment and fragmentation, along with indiscriminate snaring, as major threats to wildlife in the Annamites. The organization says conservation must account for local communities as well as wildlife. Gareth Goldthorpe, Senior Technical Adviser, Asia-Pacific, at Fauna & Flora, said: “From analysis of the data, one thing is clear: to secure the future of these biodiversity hotspots, conservation action that considers the needs of both wildlife and local communities is essential.”

Fauna & Flora’s 2024 impact report describes increases in the rabbit and other indicator species in Pu Mat in connection with a combination of patrols, law-enforcement collaboration, resident engagement and snare removal. Those reported changes were associated with the combined conservation work—not with camera traps alone. Read Fauna & Flora’s 2024 impact report.
