Fen Raft Spiders: The UK Conservation Recovery Behind the “Hand-Sized” Spider

Fen raft spiders have growing populations at UK release sites, but the evidence does not show a record-speed spread across Europe.

The “hand-sized” spider in this story is most likely the fen raft spider (Dolomedes plantarius), a large wetland hunter native to Britain. Conservationists released hand-reared spiders at sites in Norfolk and Suffolk between 2010 and 2015, and the programme has helped establish growing local populations. That is a documented UK recovery—not evidence that the species is spreading across Europe at a record pace.

What is the hand-sized spider?

The fen raft spider is described by Chester Zoo as Britain’s largest spider, reaching around the size of an adult human palm. That description refers to its overall size; it is a wetland species, not an invasive spider spreading through homes. The species was the subject of the UK conservation releases behind the headline. Chester Zoo’s account identifies it and describes its recovery work.

Where were fen raft spiders released?

The Fen Raft Spider Conservation project records releases at four sites in the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads between 2010 and 2015. The programme combined captive breeding and translocation with work to restore wetland habitat; it was a collaborative effort, not a single release that can be dated simply as “10 years ago.”

Across that period, the programme account says around 6,000 hand-reared spiderlings and 56 adult females with nurseries were released. These are programme release totals, not a count of spiders alive today. The project also describes all four translocated populations as growing, although growth varies between sites. The project’s account of the new populations gives the release history and monitoring context.

How many are there now?

In August 2024, Chester Zoo reported that the RSPB estimated around 10,000 breeding females across the UK. This is an estimate attributed to the RSPB, not a precise census, and it refers to breeding females—not every spider or just the released populations. The RSPB’s overview discusses the species and its conservation.

How does a fen raft spider hunt, and is it dangerous to people?

Fen raft spiders hunt at the water’s edge and on the surface, sensing vibrations through tiny hairs on their legs. Chester Zoo describes them as harmless to humans. Their size can look imposing, but they are adapted to aquatic wetland habitats rather than to life in people’s homes.

As RSPB Mid Yare nature reserves site manager Tim Strudwick put it: “These spiders have an important role in maintaining the rich aquatic diversity found in the grazing ditches on our reserves. The females are impressive in size, but also beautiful – they are truly special to see!”

Are they spreading across Europe at a record pace?

The available figures support a local UK recovery, not a continent-wide record. The specialist project cites RSPB data estimating that one monitored population expanded by around 200 metres a year. That rate applies to that population; it cannot be treated as a rate for all four release sites, much less for Europe. The project’s account describes local population growth and differences between sites, not a country-by-country European trend series.

The headline’s “10 years ago” is also imprecise: the documented release programme began in 2010 and continued through 2015. The material cited here does not establish a record pace of spread across Europe or identify one exact release event from ten years before the headline.

Why wetland conservation still matters

Growing populations at release sites do not mean the species is secure without continued habitat care. The conservation project reports that the fen raft spider was listed as Vulnerable on the 2017 British Red List. Its recovery has involved captive rearing, translocation, wetland restoration and monitoring; the sources do not establish that any one of those measures alone caused the gains. Maintaining suitable wetlands and tracking populations remain part of the conservation picture. The project’s conservation-status page gives its reported status.
