Fossils have yielded reported traces of proteins such as collagen, but no edible muscle survives to sample. Birds are living descendants of theropod dinosaurs, making them an evolutionary point of comparison—not proof that T. rex tasted like chicken.
Could people eat dinosaur meat?
There is no tested T. rex meat and no direct evidence that a person could safely eat it. Fossil protein findings concern molecules preserved in ancient bone or soft-tissue structures; they do not amount to preserved, edible flesh. Without a meat sample, food-safety testing, or evidence of consumption, the question remains hypothetical.
In a 2007 study, researchers reported low concentrations of type I collagen in sampled T. rex fossil tissues. Collagen is a major organic component of bone, so the finding concerns protein preservation—not a surviving cut of muscle. It tells us nothing directly about the animal’s meat, fat, texture, flavor, or culinary safety. Read the 2007 study record.
Later work has kept the focus on how such evidence is identified and interpreted. A 2009 analysis considered how to authenticate ancient collagen sequences, while a 2019 study reported evidence it interpreted as consistent with endogenous vertebrate proteins, including type I collagen, in dinosaur soft-tissue structures. These are molecular and preservation questions, not evidence of an edible steak. The 2009 analysis and the 2019 study do not report recovered T. rex muscle or a sensory record.

Would T. rex steak have tasted like chicken?
That familiar comparison is a joke or an imaginative guess, not a scientific conclusion. Birds evolved from meat-eating theropods, the dinosaur group that included T. rex, and modern birds are living dinosaurs. That makes birds relevant to understanding dinosaur ancestry, but it does not reveal the taste of T. rex flesh. The Natural History Museum explains the bird-dinosaur relationship.
Flavor depends on the actual muscle and fat, as well as factors such as an animal’s age, diet, activity, handling, and cooking. Those sensory variables are not preserved in T. rex fossils. Chicken, ostrich, or game-bird meat can be used as a playful mental image, but none is a reliable taste substitute. Crocodilians are living archosaurs, too, but that relationship does not establish that their meat would resemble T. rex.

What fossils tell us about T. rex as a meat-eater
Teeth built for slicing, not grinding
The American Museum of Natural History describes carnivores such as T. rex as using their teeth to kill prey and slice meat before swallowing chunks rather than grinding food. That reveals feeding mechanics, not the taste or quality of the animal’s own flesh. See the museum’s overview of T. rex.
Bone fragments in fossilized waste
A 1.5-foot-long fossil coprolite discovered in Saskatchewan in 1998 contained an estimated 30 to 50 percent bone fragments from a young animal. The American Museum of Natural History attributes it to a very large carnivorous dinosaur, possibly one such as T. rex; the producer was not proven to be T. rex. The fragments indicate that a large carnivore could consume and digest substantial bone, but they do not tell us what its prey tasted like—or whether T. rex could be safely eaten by people. Read the museum’s account of the coprolite.
